BBQ at Grandmother's

Today my Memere (french term of endearment for grandmother) had a barbeque at her nursing home. She is almost 89 years old and I love her very much. I took the and we had a nice BBQ meal outside.

I ended up chatting with an elderly man about the he had before moving into the nursing home with his wife. It was neat to hear a stranger speak so passionately about his beloved pet. It is also neat to see how the faces of the residents "light up" when they see . They all want to touch the ! Being a little shy when it comes to strangers, my usually don't respond to them. Part of me wishes they would because I know how happy it would make the residents, but I don't expect them to be responsive to total strangers...especially ones that are literally reaching out at them saying, "Come here cutie."

My Memere is doing well and she was her usual spunky self. God bless her.

Brian

Brian,

Memere, the pronounciation is similar to our Cantonese of grandma. Lovely.

Up to now, I pity those elderly at nursing homes. You wrote: "It is also neat to see how the faces of the residents "light up" when they see children." Sure, they are lonely and so dull there are all old ppl around as them. I've discussed this in my post w/ Davinciripoche and still favor more Chinese system where old ppl live w/ sons/grandsons as well as enjoying themselves alone. More humane and warm! They need to be young while they stay w/ the young.

Hi swallow: I am not an advocate of nursing homes being a person's first option either. It sure would be nice to care for her if I could. Perhaps I will someday. Right now, I just don't think I could provide the care she needs. I am sad by it, but she seems happy. Thanks for visiting.

Brian.

As long as she seems happy, dont be sad abt the situation. Just visit her more ofen w/ your kid. You feel sad bcoz of the isolation you feel in nursing home, a big difference w/ DVC's 'independent" case. Yeah, situations vary.

to welcome us as an independent human being who still occupied a position in society, not one of a supported and forcibly thankful old person living out of some family charity imposed by the "respect" due to the old.
DVC,
Your focus is independency. Indeed independent if an old person stay in nursing home. But pls look into their hearts, they can tell us what they prefer - the very basic human emotion. We are just observers. Period.

BTW,

It's not family charity, nor imposed, no need to be thankful. It's natural. Chinese old ppl also enjoy freedom, feel independent. They can stay at home or go to pulic places w/ other old-young guys/gals. Lots of entertainment and exchange w/ outside world (sure, incl. gossips of their kins. )

OK, this hard-headed gal must shut up now. I guess some difference in culture due to a dif. environ./system is hard to expound.
