Zhouzhuang - How Could I Miss It?! Before heading back to Shanghai from Suzhou, we stopped by Zhouzhuang - a "water town" near the Grand Canal. Sorry to the Zhouzhuang-ren for missing such a lovely target on my blog! On my next trip, I would like to stay a couple of nights in ZZ to have quiet zzzz's. It's a wonderful place to take a boat ride (equivalent to Venezia with the gondolas) and hear the boatmen and boatwomen sing. Great stop for those who are interested in China's ancient water villages and townships. There used to be hundreds of these in their heydays. Now, there are a few which are undergoing preservation. I believe Marco Polo would feel at home while having tea in one of these quaint towns. |

Looks pretty. I've seen it in naive paintings. Looks a bit like Hue and Hoi An in Vietnam. I'm not drawn to China, having being only to Yunnan province.

I stayed in a family house inn in ZZ. Great tranquil atmosphere in the night. I had a qingtao beer on the ancient bridge under the moon, with some strangers guys giggling around. I remembered there's a sanmao wooden tea house on the river, delicious dong pao pork nuckle. And i was made my first artistic ink chop by an Taiwan artist who's residing there. This was a place that could move me to tears, a small peaceful land protected fm the outside chaos. But it was in 1999, dunno how it was now.

I would love to go to Vietnam and check the villages out. But I'll need a translator and guide. Heard they charge inflated prices when you don't speak the language. BAH

It has gone through more preservation, and tourist dollars have attracted more shops and people to the town. With red lanterns along the canals, the soul of the town comes out at night. BAH

BAH, your acronym sounds very derisive btw, a guide and driver are inexpensive to arrange once you land in Hanoi, especially in the Old Quarter where there's a glut of guesthouses (US$8-12 for an airconditioned ensuite room) and small travel agencies. A week in north Vietnam costs US$300, driver, guide, 4WD and petrol included. You pay all meals and accommodation for driver and guide. Oh, as I've found travelling in one or two (ahem) slightly off-the-beaten-path places in the world you can knock off a couple of dollars here even if you're a monoglot (like me) and/or charming, good looking and can tell loads of bad jokes (like me).

BAH, That means more bustling. Not my cup of tea. Ah, hardly ignored your pic. Exactly i had a beer solely on this bridge. Asiafriend, Which place you will buy yr home in China? Mold, "you can knock off a couple of dollars here even if you're a monoglot (like me) and/or charming, good looking and can tell loads of bad jokes (like me)" Wow, so demanding to knock off some $$. Do i have the chance? Really goodgoood to be on the road! We can make a good company? hehe..

Bah, Wanting to read some new travelog, that's why i visit yr blog again. Only now i read your prelude (the reason you created this blog). I appreciate your dedication of your travel log to 'her' very much. Be with 'her' on the road while you both are away and alone. Great idea. That's what i like and am practising, i tell somebody, 'Travel for me.', as if i were travelling with you.'
