Myth: The dragon

To my fellow friends (especially NNM),

This article will talk about dragon (in chinese perspective). psst NNM, please enjoy

In ancient times, the chinese viewed the dragon as an extremely powerful, noble and mysterious beast. It is a symbol of power, excellence, boldness, heroism, nobility and divinity.

Unlike their Western counterparts which were associated with negative characteristics, most Eastern dragons were seen as peaceable and sagacious creatures. They were loved and worshipped. That is why many Chinese cities have pagadoas where people could burn incense and pray to dragons. Since they were unable to control it the way they controlled other beasts, they prayed to it for protection, good weather and bumper harvests.

According to this asiapac book, dragon is made out of.....

Ears of an ox
Antlers of a deer
Head of a boar
Whiskers of a goat
Body of a snake
Scales of a fish
Claws of an eagle

(impressive huh?!)

Symbols of the dragon:
The dragon was also a symbol of imperial power.
The emperor's body was called the dragon's body and his face, the dragon's face. He wore the dragon robe (which is always gold coloured silk fabric), sat on the dragon chair (which is probably 4 times the size of an average human body size), and slept on the dragon bed (nothing impressive except its made out of hard wood but covered with gold coloured silk). His descendants were called the dragon's descendants. (If u want to know, GOLD represents the royal family or the guard who had served His Majesty for years in the battlefield).

hmmm Thats all!

Ann,

Nice intro. /promo. for Chinese culture.

We are all 'the descendants of dragon'. You know this song by a Taiwanese songwriter?

However, in mainland China, after the destructive Cultural Revolution, many aspects of our traditional culture have been rooted out. Now the S. Koreans are rushing to register everything originated fm China as their Korean Cultural Icon. What!

Very Good sharing, Ann

Chinese culture is deeply rooted with dragon culture.

"In the minds of the early Chinese people, the dragon was a god that embodied the will and ideals of the Chinese people. It is said that the dragon is a large-scaled reptile, which can become dark or bright, large or small, long or short, and can fly into the sky in the spring and live under the water in the fall. It seems that the dragon is capable of doing almost anything.Traditionally the dragons are considered as the governors of rainfalls in Chinese culture. They have the power to decide where and when to have rain. They believe the kings of the water dragons live in the dragon palaces under the oceans...."

When two dragons are placed together but turned away, they symbolize eternity via the famous Yin-Yang.

Dear Miss Toukki:

I use to pray to:

Jao Mer Guanim & her 3 Celestial Gardian Dragons
A Chinese derived deity. Spelling it how it's said “Jao Mer Guanim” ‒ broadly “Kind Hearted Mother Guanim.” There are Three Celestial Dragons that Protect Guanim. I am placing a photograph of my apartment in Asia with two of the dragons in my room that protect her as well as myself.

Sincerely,

Stan
