The Burden of Chinese - a View of Olympics Opening Ceremony

I was standing in the famous square of Macau, with a big crowd of ppl of any nationalities, to watch the opening ceremony on the huge screen.

Two things worthnoted: 1. I shedded a tear when the dancers made the ink stroke with body movements. 2. The vast majority of Philippine speculators burst into noisy job when seeing their national team parading in.

Zhang Yimou was too ambitious, too over-burdened with the task to showcase the 5000 years culture/history in a scroll of 50min.

Chinese (producers and audiences) were still indulged in our ancient dream of glory of the midland empire. I was in such an illusion that we were commoners of Great Tang, revelling at a great ceremony to show off our interior power with the visitors fm abroad.

The Burden of Chinese is so long history, so heavy, so ...

Are we proceeding with it? When will we know Simple is More and More is None?

(How do you think of the opening I was standing in the famous square of Macau, with a big crowd of ppl of any nationalities, to watch the opening ceremony on the huge screen.

Global or non-value

Sorry for coming back late. I'd respond to DVC first.

Aeshetically speaking, Zhang Yimou has the inclination to pander to westerners' taste by enlarging and distorting some Chinese symblols, esp. the countryside ones, in his movies.

Is this his move to globalization? Maybe, speaking of movies, same happens the newest Red Cliff directed by Hong Kong/Hollywood director John Wu. A Chinese with a little history and culture knowledge may not approve it.

I am happy to know you enjoyed the show. Yes, not bad, but he could have done better if he's less ambitious, with such a huge budget. Involving too many ppl? Good! I should do a survey to ask how many Chinese ppl really understand and enjoy the gala. Well, looking back, it's quite necessary to give youth an ancient cultural lesson thru this opening. But I just dont like the evoking of a past empire and reprenting it to the leaders and the world. Kind of fawning (to leadership) and showy. Perhaps I've heard too much about China threat conspiracy.

Actually, today the Chinese society is like ingeniunesly mixed of east and west. Non-global, no value. Complex national psycho! Examples, an elegant high skill Qin(or Guqin, i've had a related post long ago) player would dress herself in a gold colored wester dress, instead of a Chinese attire. You know what Qin means in ancient culture? So one word, the whole China is a strange hybrid, tal vez, the whole world!

DVC,

He's the master.

Let's elaborate on the east / west cultures difference later!
