Pulling a Bed in Macau Streets

Pic: in front of Macau Marine Museum

Last nightfall, if you happened to see such a scene in crowded Macau streets’s peak hour - a gal trolleying hard a bamboo bed on right side w/ a guy on the left side, a funny rare thing for today's auto- world ‒ don’t laugh, it's me and my pulling-bed partner.

I walked and pulled the new bed i bought w/him for 25 minuntes across streets, alleys, car-flowing roads until finally climbing up the slope top where i live. Ouch, all sweat!

The arrangement w/ the shop's shi tou po (lady boss) when I booked w/ deposit was that i paid extra money for hire a van for delivery. But then when i went there, this mid-age thin shop clerk put the bed on a trolley, I guessed he was taking it out to the main street for loading to van.

"No, i myself pull it to your place." He said.
"What? So heavy and so long way?" I couldn’t believe.

But they said No van available and the lady boss also not available for me. I wanted to pay a taxi or asked for friend's car but the bed too large to fit.

Cunning shi tou po! First, I walked behind and the guy pulled. Sooner, w/ his back bending down, I couldn’t let him alone and offered one hand for the pull. Then came the scene in the beginning.

I kept chatting w/ my pull-bed partner on the way. He did not complain. He looked happy when I joined him. He said he needed the job while looking for a better one, so whatever the boss asks him, he’d do it. For some narrow and up-turning path, he needed to pull it alone while I watched behind his thin arching back.

“To make a living is not easy.” He concluded. I agreed.

I enjoyed the laboring and sweating. But I felt sorry/angry for the shop owner’s trick. She meant to charge me van fee but spare it and abused her skinny clerk worker ‘s manpower. Capitalist thinking? To squeeze every drop of sweat and blood out of the workers? Or Chinese business way to save every coin out of the dealings?

Being cynical, I asked the clerk to dial the shop, I told the lady that I would only pay the balance amount for bed price excluding the van cost. My voice was calm, but hers was cold, “I don’t know who you are.” Wrong connection? We dialed again, the same “I don’t know who you are.”, but wait, “you can take a taxi yourself.” She pointed out my stupidity.

Ouch, was this the hot lady that received me? Anyway, I paid more to my pull-bed partner and asked him to keep it for himself and tell the boss this just did not pay according to bill.

“If she presses you, ask her come here to take back her bed.” I said.

Sure, if she comes tomorrow, I’ve slept on this lovely bamboo bed for one night.

Sure, she will never come to me.

(Yet sometimes I doubt whether I react too much due to my fighting genes. What do you think?)
