Is there a same philosophy in English? #2

Some search plus my own understanding and here comes the further explanation of these two ancient Chinese quote raised by HeartDesire.

1) The friendship between gentlemen is as plain as water. (my preferred version of translation)

Actually, the quote comes in a four-line:

"The friendship between gentlemen is as plain as water; the friendship with villains is as sweet as wine. Plain as it is, the friendship btw gentlemen lasts long and true; sweet as it is, friendship w/ villains is easy to break and cease." Because there is no utilitarianism and interest(benefit) concerns existing in gentlemen’s friendship which is as plain and transparent as the water. Gentlemen are in the same course of tao, while villains are after interest(benefit).

Therefore, the water-plain friendship is a surprised bliss. It is humane and righteous. It’s friendship btw heart and heart. It’s a tacit understanding. It is friends indeed.

Now, can you help to find an English equivalent or one in your language?

2)Better be friended with villains than with (fake) gentlemen (my version of translation)

From my own understanding, fake gentlemen are much more fearsome than villains. A gentleman may not be a true gentleman; and a villain may not always a villain. Wounds and harms done by fake gentlemen in gentlemen’s cover is much more grave than by villains, because you don’t have any guard. That’s why comes this irony. Sad!

Remarks: in Confucian and Taoism, 君子does not mean gentleman, 小人does not man villain. It takes time to get a right sentence to explain. So, let’s bear them.

According to davinci's theory, if you are my true friend, you should not compliment me. Give me hard words instead.

Pls dont be modest at voicing your own understanding. I am not sure mine is a Okey one.

Pere
Thank you for yr contribution of these two phrases. I like "Honor amongst thieves". And "there is no honor amongst theives" is not correct. More true that "there is no nonor amongst some "gentle(wo)men"
