Sexual Harassment - Controversy on a vote

"The female entertainer I like most to sexually harass"

An internet vote organized by a popular radio programme in Hong Kong that became controversial.

If you see it, what would you think?

A laugh or an irritation?

A sexual threat? a language misuse and abuse?

Is it offensive? especially an offense to feminists and women? How do men feel?

Or can we treat it as a joke only? an iconoclastic title to entertain?

The mastermind for this vote is a young male DJ successful in entertainment biz. But since its launch, the radio has received lots of protesting and complaints fm women's associations, saying that it is a great trample on women's dignity. The DJ has explained and implied regrests on press release but he didnot want to say sorry. Critics said if he didnt apologize, he would ruin his career. Now the vote has stopped and the production team for this program has issued a small pc of public apology on their website. Yet even some high HK officials critisized it.

I've asked 2 for opinion as this program was targetted to teens/youth. They said, the vote and its panel is for entertaining, so no problem.

Does it mean they can tell entertainment fm seriousness well? Is it a submerge of language? Young generation speak words worst than this but this controversy is raised bcoz they speak it in public.

What do you think? fm both social and linguistic effect.

But another vote in HK on "the male entertainer that I want the most to ..." has got no ojection and goes on quite well. The suspension point may mean more than "sexually harass".

What does it underline?

(update: The Radio Management seriously apologized to public and suspend the production team's job for 2 months, w/t this period they cant work any other part-time jobs.)

The fact that the young boys say it is entertaining says it all. They need to be educated.

Sexual abuse and of women and men starts with attitude.

What is funny about being sexually harassed? Can someone tell me?

This poll was not funny.

* Around the world, at least one in three women has been beaten, coerced into sex, or abused in some way - most often by someone she knows. One woman in four is abused during pregnancy. (United Nations Population Fund, September 2000 and summary)

* Violence against women and girls is widespread - one woman in three will experience violence during her lifetime, most often at the hands of someone she knows. Each year 2 million girls are at risk of genital mutilation, and up to 5,000 women and girls are the victims of so-called "honour" killings. (United Nations Population Fund, September 2000 and summary)

That poll ties in nicely with the following article on language.

As the saying goes 'the pen is mightier than the sword'.

Through metaphors, common English phrases contribute to and
perpetuate attitudes that condone . The metaphors which we
commonly use to talk about sex often create or legitimize attitudes
which connect sex with violence, sex with degradation, and sex with
dominance. The following list is adapted from Timothy Beneke's 1982
work "Men on ."

"I'm not aware of any common English phrases that allow one to
express sexual desire in a way that acknowledges both lust and
humanity." - Timothy Beneke in "Men on "

"Metaphors may create realities for us, especially social
realities. A metaphor may thus be a future action. Such actions will,
of course, fit the metaphor. This will in turn reinforce the power of
the metaphor to make experience coherent. In this sense metaphors can
be self-fulfilling prophecies." - Lakoff and Johnson in "Metaphors We

that I want to give my boyfriend a blow job?"

"Not every man is a , but every man who grows up in America

to structure his experience of women and sex in terms of status,

"I don't think men realize just how much their language can
intimidate. It doesn't comfort me any that women often use the same

fraud is best illustrated by this usage..." - Wentworth and Flexner in

Why is it not acceptable when it is a female but acceptable when the same poll is for a male entertainer?

No, gourmet, the male entertainer poll doesnt bear the title as " the male entertainer I like most to sexually harrass". Its title is "the male entertainer I like most to ..."

A fact that our society, east or west, still judges ppl by gender and set up some differences. Some words if said to female, it w/b offensive; if to male, it is not. Just bcoz the social gauge still is leaning on female side in consideration that female is weak and vulnerable traditionally. Only if this gauge exists, there is no true equity btw genders.

The world is consist of two genders, dif. ages, several races, many cultures. How to maintain a balance and reduce the differential sensitivites?

Curious,

Thank you for letting us know that much abt language.

Fm point of language and of sex, you have done a great job for us readers.

Do you want to say that lanugage itself may lead to sexual violence?

DVC

In Chinese, the spoken language for sex is rather poor bcoz Chinese doesnt speak much abt sex. Metaphors could be found in literature pieces, romantically and imaginatively put.

Thks for reminding me the word Race. But it is created to describe the physical traits. Who makes it a derogatory word? Human. Can you say race originally is not derogatory but racism is?

Btw, a belly laugh to "But men are also weaker in some aspects: for instance, a woman can deprive a man of all his property by using sex."
Some men do think women would use sex against them but if they dont swoop down how could a woman make it? Be cautious this sentence discriminates women's dignity. I know in some cases men can also deprive a woman's property by using 'love' and sex, if the woman is richer. But there is a thing called Pre-marriage Property Agreement. Use it to protect your property, man, and woman.
