Beijing Olympics and Chinese Food Menu I 北京奥运和菜单之一

Post-Xmas feast for you?

First, please see below English translation examples taken from Chinese Food Menu being used in Beijing hotels and restaurants:

北京搞笑菜单翻译

宫保鸡丁Government abuse chicken (政府虐待鸡
生鱼片Chop the strange fish (斩那陌生的鱼
夫妻肺片Husband and wife’s lungs (丈 夫和妻子的肺部
铁板牛肉 Corrugated iron beef (有皱纹的牛肉
周打鱼汤 The week beats the fish soup. (某个星期殴打鱼汤
黑椒牛柳丝炒意粉 The black cow silk fried the idea powder. (黑生丝绸炒意念粉末
日式海鲜乌冬 Black winter in type seafood soup in day. (黑色冬天海鲜汤
猪扒汤面 The pig picks the noodle soup. (猪扒窃了汤面
吞拿鱼薯仔沙律 Swallow to take the fish sand. (吞下去拿走鱼沙
罗宋汤The soup of Sung (宋朝的汤

逐字的中式英文翻译. 真是人有多大胆, 菜有多大惨.

北京正进行一场统一中国菜英文名活动以迎奥运. 你想来帮我正名或搞上几个歪名吗? 来吧.

Word by word metaphrase by ‘bold’ Chinglish ‘translators’. I am honored here, by taking the fish sand for you.

Are you flabbergasted at these ‘creative’ dishes? Any reaction in your belly? But don’t think our government really abused the chicken and the husband will eat the wife’s lungs or the wife eats his.

Please, those who are not Chinese and do not know Chinese, if you can figure out one or two dishes, I give you a big prize. Try some? I’ll come back later together with Beijing government’s effort to unify the translation of Chinese food menu in order to grace the 2008 Olympics.

Pest and Virgo,

Thks fr yr attempts. Virgo is more correct, except for two/three merit discussion.

宫保鸡丁, gong bao ji ding - spicy diced chicken with peanut;
夫妻肺片 fu qi fei pian (as you put it Marinated Lung Slices) - is not only composed of lung slices.
罗宋汤 is borsch, as DVC's translator indicated.

Nam,
Do you have a translator like DVC? or you actually know Chinese? Not bad yr translation. You beat one or two. My prize for you. Luo song tang is too plain for me. Can take it occasioanlly. Know our Cantonese long-cooked rich soup?

DVC,
How do you call the truffle dishes in yr menu? Do you mention the pig's dig?

The ridiculous translation as i showed in this post is done by checking up a Chinese-English dictionary word to word. Yet how bold the restaurants in Beijing dare use them, though it's fun for me, dunno how feels the foreigner eaters.

人有多大胆, 菜有多大惨. Yr translation is 60% to the meaning. Actualy, this is my imitation to a proverb from the Great Leap time - 人有多大胆, 地有有多大产. My amateurish translation: how bold and boastful man is, how high and large the field yields. At the time of 1950s/1960s, local officials exaggerated unbelievable number of the grain/wheat yields to the media.
