An inspiring conversation with my niece

I have been trying to get back into the IT field and searching for a fulltime job for sometimes already. The whole process is really discouraging and making me feels so darn depressing. No matter how hard I tried...road blocks just keep popping up and they are just never end. Some days I keep telling myself that it is okie and I just need to try harder. On some other days I will tell myself that hey..what the hack? I am such a loser anyway so minds as well...just pack myself up and go home!

However, this morning I had a very cute and inspiriting conversation with my lovely niece on the phone. She changed my attitude toward my frustration. I noticed that I should hang in there and deal with my own frustration and fight to reach my goal. Thanks to my sweet 10 years old niece.

Shannon: " Hello..hello..YiYi (means aunt in Cantonese) the sun is up and get your lazy butt up!!!(giggles)"

Me: "Hello...good morning!! Sweetie I already up and had breakfast too. What's up?"

Shannon: "Nothing much...but...but mommy said YiYi wasn't happy lately. Mommy also said I should talk to you about school." (I can hear her uneasiness in her voice about school)

Me: "Thanks so much...sweetie...I am doing fine. What's going on..about school? Aren't you taking tennis class at the summer camp?" (I tried to divert her into talking about her latest favorite sport - tennis!!)

Shannon: "Yes...but ..but mommy and daddy also wanted me to take a 2 weeks writing class. I hate it..no fun at all." (I can imagine her little unhappy face now )

Me: "Hmm..well..writing is fun too. You can write about anything and also your feelings!! I love the poems you wrote for me during spring break visit."

Shannon: "Oh!! you like my poems!! YiYi...but I'm not a good writer..I am not as good as Robby (Robyn a.k.a. Robby is her older sister who loves to write). I am such a loser..I can't write like her."

Me: "No..baby..of course you can write and you don't have to write like her. You can have your own way to write...just like the poems you wrote for me."

Shannon: "YiYi...mommy said that you cried a lots too when you were at my age...because GongGong (GongGong means grandfather in Cantonese)sent you to a school that you have to learn many languages. Mommy also said that you worked very hard to finish homework and didn't have much playtime. Mommy also said that you learned a lot and finished high school, college and grad school. Mommy also said that I have to finish all the way to college and maybe grad school too. I don't like it..I am not as good as Robby. I can't finish school..." (I can hear the frustration and can imagine her little sad face with teary eyes)

Me: "Sweetie...I know and I felt like that before too. But I didn't give up...I learned to read and made reading as one of my hobbies….although swimming is still my #1 hobby! Sweetie...the writing class will be fun and you just need to learn how to have fun. Sweetie...trust me…you are going to do just fine”

Shannon: “YiYi…are you sure I can do the writing class? And are you sure I can finish all the schooling and do just fine like you? And am I your favorite niece in the whole wide world? Also, Can I be the flower girl when you get married?“ (Oh boy!!! The flower girl wannabe again! )

Me: “Sweetie…you will do fine and YES! Both you and Robby are still my favorite nieces in the whole wide world. And YES!!! You will be the flower girl…err maybe a bridesmaid when I get married….if I ever going to get married! ”

Shannon: “YiYi…Hooray!!! You are the best YiYi in the whole wide world and I love you YiYi. Kisses to you YiYi. (Hearing giggles again!) But..but what is a bridesmaid?”

Me: “Well…will let you know next time but now get your pencils and paper out and start writing. You can write to many people…like me, daddy and mommy, Robby or even GongGong and PoPo.” (GongGong and PoPo means Grandparents in Cantonese)

Shannon: “YiYi…okie dokie..me and Robby love ya and hope to see you soon…before we go back to school. Bye bye YiYi…lots of kisses to you!!”

Me: “Sweetie….yeah I love you two too. I better get going to find myself a job. Please tell mommy that I will give you guys a call later. Love and kisses to you, Robby and mommy. Bye Bye!!”

it's amazing the things we can learn thru kids.. they see and deal with the same world.. but .. they are open to optimistic support.. and embrace it with .. spirit...

I feel the girl's pressure. Pls ease her, and yourself, too.

Btw, I also love talking to my 4.5-y-o niece. She also calls me "Yiyi". Sweet!

Hey swallowtsui,

Yes...pressure is no kidding but I won't quit and keep trying. Also, I like the way they call me "YiYi" too!

I have never had children before but I do have young distant cousins. I took one of them to the White Sox game the other night. It was a new experience for me, sometimes he was scared, sometimes he was acting up, sometimes he was happy and I had to adapt to each one of his moods, including his anger.

You are not a loser, you are finding your way just as I am with my young cousins. They are not sure how to react to me and I am not sure how to react to them, thus my gut instinct just takes over.

Remember, you are only human OK

Be patient with yourself,

Stan

Stan,

Yes, you are right about spending time with kids. It is also a slow learning process to let them adjust to us and ourselves to them. Thanks for your comment.

We find inspiration from many things in life and kids well they are wonderful and in there own way see things more innocent than adults do.Through kids we can also learn to be winners the best we can be as they bring so much joy to our lives and say the most wonderful things.

Hey Ashley;

Win or loose is just a personal perspective. Goals are not achieved through grand conquests, but by small victories along the way. Everything is accomplished through small steps forward, with a few step back in the middle. Don't let the few steps backward be a discouragement.

Thats the way life works for everyone, you and me alike.

Darn I yearn for a grand conquest too, but it probably won't come. Just have to take little victories, along with a few defeats, along the path.

And that conversation with ur nieces is so cute.

Nik

Nik,

Yeah...I understand that it is almost impossible to just reach the goal with a big leap. Usually one needs to take small steps along the path or even some detours to get to the goal. Sometime I feel that by talking to my love ones will actually inspire me to pick up the momentum and moving along to reach my goal. Thanks for your comment.
