Complaints from Foreigners

Foreign people are getting more and more interested in China and Chinese people. They learn Chinese, study Chinese history, come to China to have a visit, and they do business here, they choose to live here, and even marry Chinese. They like it here in China, yet they complain about something they do not like so often.

I was on a trip not long ago by train. Two old men sat opposite me. They did not talk, but both were reading books in English. Later we started to talk. I knew that they were from Singapore, and they talked both in Chinese and in English. They told me that they like China and had been to China many times. They had been to many places even more than I had. One of them told me that his would marry a Chinese girl some time this year. They could not hide their interests in China, yet they complained now and then about something they thought improper or different from the way they did.

Some of my foreign friends often do so even though they themselves live in China and have married Chinese women.

I have never been abroad. I wonder whether I will complain so often to the local people or not.

Perhaps I will...

people can be different in many places, and in all places, there are people who can be irritating.. no place is a palce of all harmony, so ther's the good the bad and the indifferent...
so ... I've seen such in my travels.. but ..each person is an individual, so it's kinda hard to summarize places... and it's citizens as a whole.. People cannot help but have interest in China for many reasons, but for certain, you can go not place that the goods that are provided are produced in china..

There's cultural difference, cunstoms difference and habit difference. Different ppl should try to emcompass instead of complaint.

From all your comments, I can see that western people tend to complain more often than Chinese people, where lies one of the differences between Chinese and western people. As binbin put it from the great person Lu Xun: Keep silent, keep silent. Erupt, or peril in the silence. ( I am not so sure about the translation of what the great person said).

Thank you call.

The mistake many people make is to impose their standards on the country they are visiting. It is understandable that they do, but it is one of the biggest reasons for the unrest in today's world. It took Europe hundreds of years to figure out a workable system (that we call democracy) and it is really unfair to force that same system, without the related learning process, to other countries such as Iran.

Indeed many westerners complain about aspects of countries they are visiting. On the other hand, I heard many Asian people (and I worked in many parts in ASia) complain about many westerners to be rude and obnoxious. This is fair when heard through their ears, but not for western ears...
In both directions there is complaining because the other party is judged using own standards. I would say that this happens for both party in both directions.

But.... the same happens between the Dutch and the Germans! And the English and the French! And the Danes and the Swedes! Ha!!!
And there is quite some difference between how the Americans and European people act as well...
Oh, even worse, it happens all the time between men and women all over the world! (I could talk ages about this specific subject, but that's another question...)

The only solution is RESPECT for other peple and cultures, never impose your own standards, norms and values to another culture. In the end nobody is right because everybody is right!

Different strokes for different folks ....What do you think of when the words foreigner or foreign... something different....So what you may see as a complaint or in difference is someones thoughts nothing is perfect and it is human nature to give ones thoughts be it that they agree with yours or not ...Does that make them wrong and your right? Its all in what side of the fence you call yourself.
So it is my thoughts that even a broken clock is right twice a day.
Thank you
