Coolie Hat...

Depending on the dictionary and research, the word coolie has different meanings. I first heard it as a derogatory name for an Asian person who came to America to work on the railroad many generations ago as unskilled labor. Wiki describes it as an unskilled laborer mainly from the Indian subcontinent.

The urban dictionary says coolie originated from the Hindi word baggage carrier and was only associated with full blooded indentured servants of Indian descent who went to Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago.

I was researching some photos and came upon workers in the rice fields wearing pointed top woven bamboo hats that protected them from the burning heat of the sun.

Photo searching some of these hats brought me to a website that described them as a traditional hat worn by Asian farm workers. That sounded accurate and I saved the photo to my computer. The unpleasant part was the online vendor named the file - deluxe coolie hat.

It was questionable in my mind if the name of the product came from management or if was it the work of the website designer. Probably someone (older) in management as I envision the website designer as a younger person who wouldn't know that term.

I did a Wiki search to find there are several movies of the name Coolie, including a 1983 Indian Bollywood action comedy. Also, Coolie is an Australian breed of dog.

Collie?
That must have been a typo on their part.
