Sockpuppet... A Sock Puppet (one word or two) is a 2nd profile created by someone (usually) for the purpose of deception. A good example would be if your blogs only receive moderate responses. By creating someone to agree with you (or in some cases strongly disagree) it will show more activity and (often) spark more activity to your blog. On another website, I have seen some habitual trouble makers (read: drama queens) who repeatedly get their profiles closed by the site moderators/administrators for disrupting the normal flow of blogs and comments. Right after they get ejected, they show up again with another profile doing the same schtick and it's not long after their Sock Puppet comes as the catalyst to repeat the process until they (again) get booted. Only a few websites attach the users IP address on every post or comment made. It makes users more responsible for their actions as everyone can see there the post came from. I may have blogged something similar as I experienced one woman pretending to be 2 different people often caught herself in a lie... especially in a chat room where many things get said and remembered. There was a husband and wife chatter/blogger duo who shared the same computer. One would log out and the other would log back in (different handle) but the same same address and people were suspicious that it was the doing of the same person. The main things were both had shared photos of the 2 of them and both had different styles. Once you got to know them, the Sock Puppet fear had gone away... especially after they met some of the other members at a social gathering. I have a hard enough time remembering the things I've said, creating a Sock Puppet profile would be a full-time job monitoring a Doctor Jekyll, Mister Hyde relationship. |
