The Art of Billboard Advertising aka Billboard 101...

I do a lot of driving and see a lot of billboards. At 65 miles per hour, there is only so much you can read on a billboard and 'stay with it'. One image, ten words perhaps? Yet a majority of billboards are overloaded with text... unless you're parked on the side of the road, you cannot possibly read all of what they display. I would think advertising professionals would know this.

Dade/Broward county line is near Hollywood (Florida) midway between Miami and Fort Lauderdale. That location is well traveled and plastered with billboards... including the 'state of the art' in electronic billboards. I'm sure the cost of advertising on an electronic billboard is high and the sign company has many advertisements in rotation.

The HARD ROCK is a major advertiser on a few of them with bold letters of the upcoming acts. You get 4 to 5 seconds before the sign changes. Simple... effective. At highway speed they have it timed correctly.

Also Tootsies topless night club has some nice 'scenery' with simple phrases like "Come join me for lunch" I estimate those signs are on for 10 to 15 seconds. Yes, long enough for a man to do a 'double-take'

Baptist Hospital hasn't got a clue... with 30+ words and some are so tiny you cannot read them. Who needs a fax number listed on a billboard... get real.

That's my take on The Art of Billboards... KISS it.

There is a measuring chart for letter size, relative to distance, which is used to determine the size and amount of content on a billboard.
same goes for lettering on the back of trucks and etc... size relative to distance, for readability.
