Skirting Hurricane Matthew...

Matthew is just over 100 miles east-northeast of Miami right now passing through the Bahamas. The storm is expected to reach landfall some 200 miles north of me in the early morning hours and ride up the coast all the way to Georgia.

The Florida governor declared a stated of emergency earlier in the week and advised coastal residents and visitors to evacuate those areas that will be impacted by the storm.

Today, I read similar news about the Georgia governor also declaring a state of emergency.

It's a good thing they are proactive in their duties to have their people on standby to aid those who are in need of help!

My family moved to Miami in the early 1960's and we have seen a many, many hurricanes. Each has it's own levels of caution.

It's the first for my wife who has only seen a few typhoons in China. We were outside until 11pm boarding up windows and taking in planters, securing garbage cans and placing any loose buckets into our storage shed. I didn't want to take any chances. yesterday at work I went around asking if everyone had their Preparation H.

It's raining and windy here, but nothing alarming and that's a good thing. I was expecting gusts more than 75mph and all I have seen so far was a few bursts 30-35mph.

Some friends and coworkers are a few hours north of me and expected to have a direct hit.140mph sustained winds will do some serious damage. At that point no amount of Preparation H will be enough.

(note, to those outside of the United States, there is an over the counter medicine sold here for hemorrhoids called Preparation H and jokingly when someone is asked if they prepared for a hurricane, we use the term do you have your Preparation H)

I would like to mention the weather forecasting and computer models predicted the path of this storm with great accuracy.

Many years ago a friend and I were talking on the phone during one hurricane where the live news broadcast said the hurricane was 100 miles off shore and both of us live inland 5 miles from the coast. We had experienced the ( calm ) eye of the storm yet the weatherman was saying it was away from land!
