Goodbye Mac...

I received a call Monday from a friend I've known since 1970 telling me that our mutual friend 'Mac' had passed away during the night.

While it didn't come as a total surprise, but it did bother me hearing the news.
All of us were band members in the early 70's and kept in touch when possible.
I spoke to Mac 3 weeks ago and wanted to call this past weekend, but I was busy removing boards I had up for the hurricane that skirted the coast.

Mac had health issues for many years. More than a decade ago he had neck surgery for bones pressing on the spinal nerves causing numbness in his hands and legs. He never fully recovered and was forced to retire with a disability. He was a functional alcoholic who loved to work and always talked about his skills to organize the warehouse he was assigned to manage. Smoking... that also took a toll on him. He was over 3 packs a day when pneumonia put him in the hospital for a few weeks. Later he revealed tumors in his lungs were on an X-ray.

Mac had a funny sense of humor and really good recall to names, dates and places... surprising for someone who consumed so much alcohol.

He lived the life of a hermit on a 2 acre piece of land in North Carolina that he loved. For many years he stated when he "Goes away" he wants to be cremated and have his ashes sprinkled over the wooded area just behind his home.

I'm in contact with his closest friends who are in touch with his sister who will see to it his wish is granted.

Mac didn't fear death and wanted to slip away in the night and not die a horrible death like a car accident. That wish came true as well.
