Stopping porch pirates...

I read a story yesterday that comes too late for this Christmas season, but it was about ways to avoid thieves from taking packages delivered to your doorstep when you aren't around to bring them inside.
The story reports that as many as 20% of all packages sent out this holiday season will be stolen and complaints this year are up 500% shocking numbers considering more people are making purchases online than in previous years. The average price of a stolen package is reported to be $250.
In an attempt to discourage porch pirates, some police agencies have put out warnings that many packages are baited with GPS tracking devices and they will arrest and prosecute package thieves.

It was suggested to have packages delivered to a place where someone can receive your package like your office. You can have the shipper request signatures or pickup packages at the post office or station where they will be waiting for you and not sitting on your doorstep in view of porch pirates.

Some communities are more a challenge than others, but that may not be as much difference for long, when "roving thieves" decide to canvas the more economically prominent areas.
My friend has their packages delivered to the mail room at work.

I know I'd not let any service provider have access to enter my home, as I've seen as an advertised service.

I've seen items with a thin cable and some type of thing that makes a loud beeping sound, if the cable is cut. It requires some mechanism to "deactivate it and remove the cable'. draw back: surely this has a cost associated.
