The exotic food I had in Down Under

I joined WTT (Women Traveling Together) and gained friendship. I emailed with them, exchanged our photos, we shopped together, laugh together, .... Carol lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, my roommate lives in Minnesota state (she said she missed the warm weather in Down Under as she lives in a snowy state now), ....

I am the only Asian in the group. The strange one who ate exotic food. However, they taught me many deserts and liquor that I have never had before.

The Barramundi fish fillets is the best among all the exotic food. The fish fillets has no bone, it is very fine and dedicate, taste better than Salmon. I like "Lamb cutlets" the 2nd. You need to order medium rare for the best taste, dip in the special sauce they provided and come with salad. The 3rd exotic food is kangaroo meat, but you need to order medium rare, or else, it will be too chewy. As that famous "crocodile medallion", it is such a small portion (a big coin size), I really didn't know (not enough for me to describe) its taste. It taste like chicken. As the "Seafood platter" which probably can get from elsewhere that is near ocean, such as California. It is the various seafood in a same plate. However, that Calamari taste much better than squid. (sometimes, squid almost can chock my throat). My first time had calamari on the seafood platter. I ate "King Prawns" on the Michaelmas Cay cruise. The size is large prawn, steam cooked. NZ and Sydney, Australia have good seafood. Cairns in Australia has lots of fruits, pineapple is sweet, watermelon, melon, cantaloup, apple, orange, banana, kiwi fruit, .... mixed with carrot, celery, and beets, ... you got the best vegetable & fruit juice in the morning.

I am an omnivore and enjoyed all kind of food in New Zealand and Australia. Of course, I gained weight.

For the entire 16 days trip, I only had chicken once at Te Pula (in Rotorus, NZ) where Maori people cooked food with geyser steam.

Nobody in our Caucasian group knew about Chinese casino place serve buffet. You didn't tell me before the trip either. (I had free schedule day on Feb 13 before Farewell dinner) So, I didn't go any Chinese casino for food. I saw there are many Chinese stores in Cairns and Chinatown in Sydney with Chinese characters signs. I live different style than most of Chinese in foreign countries. My pharmacist job required me to speak English, so I don't want to practice Chinese which I have known very well for my first 25 years.

I only can order food that on the restaurant menu. I wish I can have snake meat for dinner as exotic food but that will scare all my Caucasian women in the group. Ha, ha, ha,... They probably will think I am weird.

There are 3 vegetarians among 18 in our group. I think those 3 have missed out a lot of great foods in NZ and Australia.

The largest prawns are on Michaelmas Cay cruise. I saw only few women tried the prawns or just 1 or 2 in their plates. I ate six prawns because they didn't want to eat. They ate chicken instead. OMG, they have missed good foods.

When in the late afternoon, after all the "snorkelers" and "scuba divers" came back to boat, they served us "wine" and "fruits" and "cake". I saw only "fruits" but Caucasians only saw "cake". We ate different foods.

Wow, it is big.

Do you eat "exotic foods"? Why Caucasian women don't want to try exotic food? None of them tried kangaroo or crocodile or lamb cutlets. Why? Do Caucasian men don't eat exotic foods either?

I intended to order "snake" in Sydney, but it was NOT on the menu.

I had king prawns 4 times. In Auckland, NZ for seafood platter dinner, on Milford Sound cruise, on Michaelmas Cay cruise, and on Sydney horbour cruise. Its size is much bigger than shrimps.

BTW, kangaroo meat and crocodile meat are NOT available in New Zealand.

According to the bus drivers in NZ, in 1800+ had no mammals expect bats. NZ had been called as "bird country". NZ has very selectively imported "sheep", "cow" and "deer" to farm. There are no harmful mammals such as snake, lion, tiger, cougar, elephant, fox, kangaroo, crocodile,.... in NZ. You are very safe to camp there.

Warning: Do NOT visit Milford Sound in NZ (South island of NZ) in June - August because there are many snow and tree avalanches there. Summer in USA is winter in NZ, winter in USA is summer in NZ (especially true in South island).
