I am paid member with 24 hr Fitness (pre-paid 2 years), there are Yoga class, Zumba dance, Power dance, Bicycling, ....... that included in subscription. I only attended Yoga once because it is too difficult for me. I join Zumba dance every Saturday morning (no stock market on weekends).

I go on regular bicycle for 15 - 20 minutes and elliptical for 12 minutes on Saturdays. I don't do weightlifting. I don't walk on treadmill either because it made me dizzy after stop walk on it.

beyond fantasy:

Ever since I quit my pharmacist job in July 2009 in order to take care of my mother, I started to gain weight fast, very fast. I stayed home so I didn't care about my appearance as nobody noticed me. I don't need to face "patients" (customers) in the public (pharmacy), so I care less my appearance. This could be a part of reason. I have stayed home for my mom and trading stocks, so I don't need to dress up, or put on make-up.

Yes, the mid section is the major problem - the waistline and thigh. During I took care my mom for 5 years, I didn't go travel or dating or exercise. I have confined in my home. The kitchen is right there. The next thing I know, I gained weight FAST.

After my mom passed, I joined 24 hr Fitness and went to Australia and New Zealand, but I can see from my photos, my face is "round", I have to buy new clothing, .....

I have to workout, exercise, watch my diet. Hope it is NOT too late.

I've lost 15lbs - When I went through the radiation I was over 195, I am now at 180. I simply changed things I do, changed things I eat and though I don't get the exercise I should.

I had lots of dress slacks made in 2009, I can still wear them, they had adjustable waist, but now they are almost too big, but with a belt they wear well.
I have some shirts I can still wear, the issue is neck size, I was wearing 17, now I have to buy 17.5, but some of them fit well others don't but I think it was a problem with the cleaners, they washed them in starch which caused some to shrink.

Yes, it is a definite fact our metabolism changes, but artificially trying to bring it up is not good, especially for men.. Some took the testosterone supplements, but found out they cause strokes and heart attacks.
I just accept I can't do thing with the gusto I use to. Recently I have been going to the park to dribble the basketball, I find I can control the ball well, but I don't have what it takes to do that once upon a time youthful burst, and I can't jump like I use to, as a matter of fact, gravity pulls on me because I don't have the muscle kinetics that I had in youth. It's just life !!!!

I noticed when I was in HKG and Thailand, that as the women got older many lost that youthful slimness, they gained some weight naturally.
Also settling into living without running about like we did when we were trying to achieve some goal, changes the way our bodies work.
It's the same with women, many time when women marry, they become more settled and over time they naturally pick up weight.

We get older, we don't have so much nervous energy, so in our more settled energy mode we will gain weight as well as that nervous energy spontaneity changes as well.

I look at teenage, they don't have the thickness in the mid section, but in general men over 35 start to get it naturally. again, its just life.

anyone can discount the element of lifestyle change, but fad diets only work when one is committed to the cycle of the fad, but fads fade away and back comes the weight and so too does the metabolic manner of our being change.

some women in their 40's may have retained some level of slimness, but they too gain at a rate sometimes, slower and sometimes faster, but as with life it happens. Then many when they get past their late 60's the body began to shrink a bit, as if you look at many older people they are not the size they were during their 40-60 age range.

Special thanks to Kayra:

You have been very helpful in my blogs from time to time. No matter it was adding photos to a blog or this topic "losing weight".

My mother had osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis, so I have to watch out my bone too. I told to my MD about bone, she told me to exercise to make joints flexible, so walking and exercise will be helpful.

I Google "brisk walking" and "power walking" and exercised with the video in front of my computer. I need to exercise consistently every day that is the key to successfully lose weight.

Thank you for all of your suggestion and encouragements. Thank you all.

During these graveyard long hour shifts for 9 & 1/2 yrs, I had no breakfast or lunch and only eat dinner, slept only 3 or 4 hrs or even less. I have worked very hard and took care of my family, 2 houses, 5 cars, furniture, traveling, ... paid everything for many years but I forgot to take care of myself.

I started to date in 2005 - 2008. Those clothes I wore to China trip in May 2008, I can't wear them now. I know I have gained weight since 2009, little by little. I quit pharmacist job in July 2009 in order to take care of my mom for near 5 years. She had severe osteoporosis, multiple bone fractures, rheumatoid arthritis, ...

Actually my life changed to normal, sleep at night, eat breakfast, ... since July 2009, but why I gained so much weight for the past six years. Every morning I got up 6 a.m. for stock market.

I bought a lot of medicine that Dr. Oz recommended on TV for losing weight, i.e. 7-Keto, Forskolin, Caraway Seeds, Saffran extract, .... Spent $600+ but NONE of them work. On the contrary, I kept gaining. I went to see a MD for slim Wellness clinic, spent another $600+ for 12 weeks injections of Vit B6 + B12 + Lipotropics. Another failure. This MD said "East any kind of meat (poultry, beef, seafood, processed meat), eggs, cheeses. No limits on quantity". No carbs or sugar, no rice, no pasta, no bread, no flour made foods, no noodle, ..... (zero grams of Carbohydrates), No fruits because fruits contain fruit sugar that 1 fruit sugar = 2 Glucose. I don't eat Chocolate or chewing gum. Yes, I eat meat. I Google it, it is called "Dr. Atkins diet".
No, it didn't work on me at all. I still gain weight and fast. I have NEVER been a diabetes nor high Cholesterol. I checked every 3 months lab tests - all normal. I am worried and confused.

I think it must be "Metabolism Slow Down" by aging. But how can I boost up my metabolism? We are all getting older, NOT younger.

Every time I saw on TV or advertisement that people lost 100+ lbs or more. I couldn't even lose 10 lbs. I tried to eat very little meal but I still gain weight. I jointed 24 hr Fitness as member since March 3, 2014 when my banker friend suggested me that he exercise everyday. I still NOT losing any weight. He told me to hire a "personal trainer". I hired a trainer for 3 months but quit for too expensive and too rigid program. I regular go to Zumba dancing for an hour, 20 minutes bicycling, 12 minutes on Elliptical machine every Saturday.

I don't know what else I can do??? I will turn to "SIXTY" in 2 months. It is scary.

Precisely, what I was saying when I spoke of working incessantly. It changed everything, as I worked both day and night, alternating hours to cover a 24 hour operation, of which I managed three different areas of function. I made money, but it disturbed my life in the age range my life should have been settling into a routine. Previous years, youthful things interrupted much of the need for balance.
Starting in 2002, I lost lots of money with crazy stuff at work and a lawsuit which i fought for too many years. Finally, after attorney screw up I finally let it go, and got over as well the fact of being outsourced after 28 yrs. I had good resources up to 2007 - then all hell broke loose, I let 3 houses go, one of which was a big drain and two which were costly and generating nothing but losses. Then I went 4.5 yrs without working, living on saving while trying to start a business, just as I had everything set up, I practically ran out of money to push it over the finish line as the 'economy tanked"... which resulted into more losses. My paper net worth and cash sank !!!!!! Now, I have One Car, A 2007 Harley Ultra Classic with only 4k miles on it, two houses and the second house has been a loosing element for the years I had it, (the only reason I kept it was thinking family member might at some point need it, but that proved a bust, as not only family members but others who lived there resulted to cost me losses), now the house has been empty all but 6 months of the past 2 yrs, at a loss of 14K in the past two yrs. IT is going to be sold "as is", Period. If you think that is bad, the company turned our Pension over to the Guarantee company, so I only get 1/3 or maybe less than what my Pension should have been, I was suppose to have full pension, with medical and flight benefits, but I was 10 months short of the age to qualify for such. So I got only 5 yrs medical, 5 yrs of free travel and my reduced pension. The 5 yrs was up in 2010.
I don't trust any Private Company[/B], Now I work for a Public Organization, they have pension, medical and the pay is not good but the job is stable and the benefit program is solid. I will never again trust a Big Private Business, !!!!!!!
I've restructured my expense, where they are not a problem to cover the basics of home, utilities and basic living things, I don't care much for the luxury stuff in the big picture of it all, Though it would be good to have travel funds, and a few other things. But... I did not travel much when I had the benefits for all those years, because mostly I spent the time working.
I no longer live in California, and the living here is less expensive, I do miss the California Weather !!!!!!! Here the weather is CRAZY !!!! i DON'T LIKE IT. But its tolerable, I don't like they have tornado's, hail and it is in a region that is too close to hurricanes, but not in the heart of hurricane area.
going outside to exercise is not ideal, its generally either too hot, or too cold, or something of such... and that gets in the way of "walking" especially when I was so use to walking in nice weather in California.

I was determined to not get any type of cancer, but whamo !!! at 59 it happened. I did the surgery and treatments and feel I am cancer free. Now, I just focus on getting general health to top standards.
Next year if I want, I can draw early Social Security, but I probably won't, because I don't like the limits they place on earnings, so I am still in good health to work and I know being busy is better than not being busy, as that 4.5 yrs convinced me, I'm not interested in retiring and doing nothing.
I thought about going for a Director's Position, but I don't know if I need the stress, I would take on Asst. Director or so.
If I go for it and get it, It would produce more income, which would be used for savings and MANAGED investment. I don't trust much in anyone managing investments.
I only have a few stocks in small volume, but my average is over 125% since I had them. I do plan to buy "Silver" because I can sit on it and wait for it to grow, its not fast growth, but it is a certain bet to rise.

I still have interest in business, with the previous plan, and one that I've long had, as well as a partnership I am working on building for tech related developments.

I write daily, which is something I've done for 40+ yrs so I'll continue doing so.

I don't care about new cars and stuff, I do like good clothes, but I don't care for overly expense clothes because I don't think it's worth it, when I can find good things at reasonable cost. I like shirts, but I won't spend much on them, because I only wear it once and it has to be cleaned, which is an expense, so I can't justify buy expensive shirts and then paying to clean them, because over time it doubles the expense of the shirt.

It's important to put money to buy "quality food", which is always more expensive than getting run of the mil stuff. So, anything made with more natural stuff always cost more. I may get another Porsche at some point, but it won't be a new one, I saw a older model 911 turbo, for a fraction of its original cost. It originally was 125k, I see it is now around and some are under 45K. Besides its not a car for everyday driving, its a luxury toy. I'm more interested in upgrading my home, floors, back yard design work and stuff like that. I enjoy being at home, so home is the thing I care to make comfortable and convenient with what I like. THE MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL IS "GOOD HEALTH".
I'm not into the game of pursuing women as if I'm some youthful foolish person. So, any woman I meet has to be stable minded and have lived past the frivolous stuff.

I don't need a very big house, I have a standard 4 bd rm ranch style home 2000 sq.ft. and I generally don't go in all the rooms in it, so having a bigger house does not make much sense. Unless, I move my mother in as she ages. I can park 4 vehicle and a 5th if necessary in the driveway area without one blocking the other, my back yard is big enough to have a 'home garden" without disturbing the rest of the yard. I want to install a fixed position home generator because we have power outages in bad weather and I'd like to excavate to build a storm shelter in the back yard with its own power unit or a line from the aux power unit and air source...... and simply RELAX AND LIVE.

I do wish my neighbor would get rid of some of the massive trees in his yard !!!!! I will not buy another house close to anyone with that many trees.

Some friends want to have big land in the country, I don't really need that, I'm close to hospitals and other things, I'm not one who would do much with having a lot of acreage, My father had that, and it takes too much time, work and expense to maintain it.

It's enough work just working on ones health and well being....

Thanks for everyone who contribute your suggestions.

I was slim when younger. When I found out I was pregnant, the OBGYN doctor said I had anemia and need to "eat for two persons". He suggested to eat more meat especially steaks. So, I did.

Life was busy with two children. I gained a little "baby weight", but nothing to concern about "overweight". Because I had a "weak husband", so when my son was 3 y/o I had my own pharmacy. Life was even busier with full-time career and full-time mother/wife jobs. The health insurance changed in 1997, the HMO insurance became predominate over regular insurance. Most HMO insurances don't sign contracts with "independent pharmacy" (only 1 location, they prefer chain stores). My near-by doctor offices cut down opening days. So, I closed my own pharmacy after near 4 & 1/2 years. My financial was good, I bought a brand new "model house" with 40% down.

I went in stock market for 3 years and had been forced to liquidate my stock accounts on Dec 22, 2000, I lost money BIG TIME. I immediately found a full-time pharmacist job on Dec 23, 2000 working night shift at a 24 hour pharmacy. It was burning midnight oil job. Work 7 nights on and 7 days off. Long 80 hours in 7 nights and had 7 days off. It was very dangerous to drive home in the early morning rush hours when people rush to go to work. I even found a part-time job at Kaiser hospital pharmacy on my 7 days off. I wanted to make money that I lost in stock market. I got 2 jobs for 7 or 8 months, Kaiser hospital pharmacy offered me a full time midnight job. Then changed to CVS for an incentive free $15,000 for midnight hr for at least 2 yrs.

My sleep and diet became upside down. I have worked from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. I slept in the morning, no breakfast, pick-up kids from schools at 2 p.m. or 3 p.m. cooked dinner for family. Sometimes, I only slept 3 or 4 hours in the morning worked all night long (12 hr x 3 and 11 hr x 4 = 80 hrs) no over-time pay in 2 weeks for 9 and 1/2 years. Life was tough.

I digress from my "weigh gain" to "pharmacy career" to explain my diet changed. I didn't have normal life. I was disappointed with my ex-husband who just lived in good life when I was so busy juggling my career and taking care 2 children and household work. I filed divorce in May 2004.

(to be continued)

I'm LEARNING MORE AND MORE ABOUT VITAMIN Supplements: just taking a hand full of vitamins is not the answer for me. I chose among them and alternate which ones I take, I do take the multi vitamins daily, the others I alternate. I found out recently, that too much iodine supplement can be toxic, as well as it can interact with BP and Glucose medicine, I also found out that selenium and vitamin C are recommended if one is going to use iodine supplements, equally so, that iodine should only be consumed when it consumed in drops, no more than one or two drops, but I don't see it as something required on a daily basis. I have cinnamon, ginger and various other vitamins, but equally so, in my soups I use various alternating spices.

I think there is a great deal to be said about "cooking with love", which means be of care in what and how one cooks and what is put into what is being cooked. It matters.

Our bodies are amazing, we only need to feed it and give it water, and it is designed to manage itself for a very long time. It our responsibility as to what we feed our bodies.
I am not a big eater, so I don't pile food on plates, and I rarely have gone for seconds during my entire life.
I eat with my mother at least once a week, I generally use a saucer sized plate and not a large full sized dinner plate.

I still have pounds to loose in the mid section, but that too is related to work in improving how my digestive system processes what I eat.

Over our lives, we impact our digestive system, by our stresses, our negligence and various other means, and one we reach a certain age, it is necessary to work to make corrective adjustments before we develop non reversible conditions in that area.

As a lifestyle thing, I don't like "Fads" I don't care for it with clothing, habits, gadgets and such things. I like what works for me.
On a humor note: there is no way I'd ever wear one of those suits with the "too small" jacket that is too short in length. I buy loose fitting Suits, I buy shoes with standard traditional heels that are comfortable, and such. I dress well, but I'm just not into being dictated to by fashion designer and their seasonal stuff.

The Word Moderation is something we CONTINUALLY have to learn in our lives. I like lobster, but it is not something I'd eat overly frequent, one because of the cost, and the other is because how I like it prepared would mean that I can't eat it daily. I like fish, but not all kind of fish. I think dark meat chicken is best for soups, and white meat chicken is good for light snack occasions or when they make it as special high dollar dishes, which is not something I'd go out to frequently buy, its suitable designed and served for special occasions, but it is not something found in general menu's.
There are various things I simply don't care for,

I almost resent the fact that Taco Bell sells that junk they call meat on their taco's and burrito's. I think its an insult to the public. Why can't you just sell quality meat, in the ultra small portions they sell. Some burger joints sell this hard pressed stuff they call hamburger meat, I know of a place that sells real ground meat and very fresh vegetables and some type of bread that is extremely light on their burgers. It does not leave one sluggish after eating it.
some places sell chicken which is like the size of chickens on steroids, I try to avoid those, and then there are places that sell chicken as if the chicken was under developed when they processed it. So, one has to be careful when selecting fast food chicken.

Even Beef, some is generally over priced, but to seldom eat it, one has to pay a higher prices to get the best cut, or its best to leave it alone, or be very specific as to what it will be used for and how it is to be cooked.

too much noodles, too much rice and such things may not be good, another thing I read was that many of the slim figure Asians have also high cholesterol issue, because of the various methods their foods or cooked and the various oils that are used in the process of preparing. Various mexican foods can have too much oil, and soul foods depending on how its cooked may have too much oil or fats in the processing methods.
One has to continually learn, how food is prepared and how to cook food based on their health concerns and body conditions.

Again, its about LIFESTYLE CHOICES AND MANNERS, more than it is about faddish type diets. Our bodies often tell us when we need to eat certain things by the various urges and sometimes cravings, then we have to manage our moderation in heeding these urges.

In my late 40's I worked incessantly, did not sleep on a normal schedule and did not eat along a measured diet and gained "mid section weight".. I was work active, but not sports active. Although my arms and legs did not gain much at all. By the Mid 50's -the mid section was as if it was set in some fixed stage of holding the weight.
Now in my 60's and after medical issue and surgery, it has forced me to look at what I eat, and how I sleep as well as exercise.

I think between the age of 50's we have to be concerned about medical related changes and age susceptibility to many things health wise.
the heart attack range is generally from mid 40's to and through the 60's because we are in a big biological transition stage, for men and for women. We have a hormonal change that is distinct to the individual, We have the past history of our habits, diet and many things which are of effect upon what is our condition at these age ranges.

Slim does not mean healthy, but it is important to work to be proportionally managed in our body mass and how we get 'age spread".

When we are young we don't read labels on foods, we go for "taste"
we go for what "looks and is promoted as being delightful treats". None of this is helped by the food makers, because they say one thing this decade and a decade later they say something else.

Example: Long ago they said animal fats were bad, so they went to trans fats, now they say trans fats is bad and animal fat although not good, but is better than trans fats.

As we age, we look for more "natural", we have to learn the many names they use for sugar and every other thing they don't want to simply say, they use words no one but chemist understand. I try to avoid foods with words that should not be on the label.
For decades of our lives we eat stuff with a list of words that are utterly meaningless to us in youth, but as we age, we learn the covert aims as to why these words are used, because if they said it in simple terms, 'we'd avoid such products".

We since the 1960's have been bombarded with "pre made heat and eat meals", then came the microwave and in our rush, we nuked our food and bought food that could easily be nuked and eaten.

Sad as it is, if Man Packaged it - one should be of great care in selecting it as a main diet item.
In some instance, what is within "canned food",vs can we buy the same product in frozen form ? then we need to read the frozen food label to see what is in it.

I looked at the Chicken drumetts and wings, they had a 10lb package, on the label it said, "injected with chicken broth", among other things.. my question is "WHY" and what is within the broth? mankind's greed is making an Obese society and ultimately making people sick and killing people.
It's very difficult to buy "clean foods in Supermarkets" because manufacturers spend a great deal of time trying to find words to hide the stuff they put into it.

We have chemically altered vegetables, as well as vegetables sprayed with preservative substances, these substances don't break down in the body as natural untreated food would. Our bodies have to constantly adjust as if its constantly "under attack of foreign substances". Then in the processing phase it is certainly going to leave some residual build up in our bodies.

We don't need to get on some marathon running kick, or go to the gym like we are trying out for the Olympics, but we need to know ourselves enough to know what is "toning exercise" more than the over indulgence and body break down type of exercise.
We are not 20 something, so all those advertised P90 and such stuff is not for the average person, its maybe function for people in their 20's because their metabolism is far different than once one passes the age of 35. We don't need muscle man exercise after 35 or so, because as with age muscle tone changes, and who wants to have all that muscle mass saggin by the time they are in later years unless they continue trying to push that mark. Look at Stallone and Schwarzenegger; they look terrible as to body mass at these advanced ages.
Some of us had jobs with sedentary positions for a long time, some had jobs that were standing, but in fixed like positioning for long periods of time. These things have impacts over the course of life.

there is simply some nature of thickness that develops in the general person's mid section as we age, we don't twist and turn as we did when we were young, we instead move our whole body around when we need to grab or pick up something. the body shapes itself in accord to how we live and what we do, including what we consume and how we conduct ourselves after we consume.

It's no magic fix, its simply acknowledgment and life style adjustments that is needed, not fad diets, or fad exercise, but how we live and adjust our lifestyles.

I've been fortune my whole life as to health until the age of 59, and out of the blue, I developed what I never wanted to have, and it impacted my life in ways I'd never have though to happen. But - as to life adjustments, I'm trying to adjust to these changes as well. It has no affected my outer appearance, or my generalized mobility or such, and mentally, I did not go into mass depression, but I acknowledged that there is chance and I must adjust to it.

Currently I deal with high blood glucose, recent reading sent me into more adjustments, and more lifestyle changes in what I eat, even though I though I was eating reasonably well. So, I have to cut out certain things and adjust to a different diet and be of concern to read labels of what I purchase.

Situation: I went to buy cookies, I was of aim to buy "sugar free", the problem they want to over charge for this crap, like 2,99 and 3,99 for packages 1/3 the size of other packages, but I remembered a Nutritional who visited our work, said be careful with sugar free, because they have too much negative other stuff. So, I opted for cookies that had the lowest sugar and lowest sodium and I pay attention to what the 'serving size is".. on this particular cookies the serving size was 7 cookies. Well, I know I'm not going to eat 7 cookies at one sitting, so I chose this cookie, as I may eat 3 or 4, and go about my business.
I buy the Simply Orange, Orange juice, it does not have as much stuff in it as other brands, I don't try to overload of fruits, but I do enjoy making a variety of different types of soups, using generally frozen vegetables, since there is not a mass of 'fresh vegetable markets" like there use to be decades ago. I make various Stir fry dishes, but I use water for the cooking, I add soy sauce and general the type sausage I add give it enough oil to soften the vegetables more. I always check to bowl when I'm finished to see that it is not left with high oil residue.. If so, I cut down on the meat added, and in some cases I may use Olive Oil. I do use occasionally "Real Butter" but I don't buy that imitation stuff they call margin or such.
I have cases of water at work and at home, I keep water by my bed, I drink it when I first wake up, and often drink some before I go to bed.
As we age, it is normal that we will awaken during the night for bathroom visits, so I don't panic about drinking water at night, I don't do it every night, but I take an 81mg aspirin before bed, or I take one in the morning, ( if people note, at night and early morning is when people generally have heart attacks and strokes, so I take the aspirins at the time such things would be more likely).
I take my BP medication, and other meds in the morning. before I go to work. I've recently started to make oatmeal, grits or something when I get to work. Then I am working on 'eating something "every 2hrs, whether its something small, I buy packages of tuna, I take soup to work, I have cans of soup at work, and I try to find things that are easy on the system to eat during the day.

It's difficult as I've learned to go to work without packing something, because usually in the downtown areas, the options are odd, its generally some type of fast food, chicken, burgers, Chinese food and subway and such. I don't like all the bread on Subway, and Chinese is infrequent because too much of the food is "shiny" which means there is oil in it heavily. I don't eat everyone gravy and sauces, because I don't know what they put in it.

Again... It's Lifestyle changes .... "FOR ME".

A man told me your time will come,, thanks DAD,,

there are many reasons for weight gain,,
Metabolism for one slows down ,,, medication, I have found is a balancing act,, the side effects are worse then problem lol

the bottom line,,, stay away from the fried, sweet, fast , food ,, and
get off your butt and walk up those stairs instead of the elevator lol

Have a good weekend to all ,,, remember your Fathers ,,,,,,
