The Drinkable Book has water-purifying pages

The drinkable book - Water is Life
For people in developing nations or rural locations, getting clean water may soon be as simple as opening a book … and ripping a page out. That’s the idea behind The Drinkable Book, developed by Carnegie Mellon University postdoc Theresa Dankovich. Each of its pages is made from a thick sheet of paper impregnated with silver and copper nanoparticles, that kill 99.9 percent of microbes in tainted water that’s filtered through it.

Dankovich began work on the technology when she was earning her doctorate at McGill University, continuing it at the University of Virginia’s Center for Global Health. She has now formed a non-profit company, pAge Drinking Paper, to get the book into production and distribution.

Every page of the book is made up of two filters, each one of which in turn being capable of cleaning up to 26 US gallons (100 liters) of water – one book should reportedly be able to handle one person’s water needs for four years.

After the filter is removed from the book, it’s placed in an included box-like holder which is then mounted on top of a 5-gallon bucket. The dirty water is then poured through.

In field tests conducted in South Africa, Ghana, Haiti and Kenya, the paper achieved 99.9 percent purity when filtering water containing high amounts of bacteria from recently-dumped raw sewage. While some of the silver and copper particles do leach into the clean water, Dankovich says that the levels are well below Environmental Protection Agency and World Health Organization limits.

Theresa is now planning on further field studies, and refining the design of the book. She will presenting her work this week at the 250th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society, in Boston. More information is available in the following video.

Theresa Dankovich is now testing her "Drinkable Book" to purify from ocean (sea water) to drinking water to benefit many countries in the desert such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Dubai, .... As you know, we have endless source of sea water.

I came from Taiwan since 1980, have been in USA for 35 & 1/2 years. I have drank tap water in USA for 35.5 yrs. I have NEVER got sick drinking tap water (without boiling), so we don't need "Drinkable Book" as much as those people in need in Africa, China and India.

WoTuiShou, you have lived in Arizona. How come you don't know we can drink tap water in USA is SAFE. papaya, you live in Singapore and your Chinese friends live in China, so they have to boil the tap water before drink it. That's why they don't believe tap water is drinkable without boiling. Because those Chinese have never came to USA.

Theresa Dankovich invented "Drinkable Book" that is to benefit to those poor countries in Africa and China where tap water is NOT safe to drink.

It is sad to know some people have no knowledge to know whom to believe. Some people don't have the wisdom to know what is true what is false.

Theresa Dankovich is now testing if her "Drinkable Book" filter can use to purify ocean water (sea water) so that will benefit to the countries in desert such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt and many other live in desert. As you know, ocean is endless source of water.

    Quoting WoTuiShou:
Again, everyone puzzling over who is fake and who is not. It's as if someone was paying you,
or if you got to be prom queen.

    May I ask?
    Are ya gonna buy one?
Well then. It doesn't really matter much does it?
Yes, it really matters. It matters about Dr. Theresa Dankovich reputation and 7 years hard-working and research to find the right material for water filters to save those people in Africa and China. Did you even bother to Google the fact? Do you believe a couple women webchat or QQ messages who don't have degrees or knowledge about importance of drinking water? Whole bunch of ignorant people.

In USA we can enjoy drinking from tap water and we take for granted. How about the rest of world, the 3rd countries?? How about you are camping in the mountain? Isn't that wonderful to have the water filter so that you can drink from the creek water after using this drinkable book? Just carry a page of filter instead carry lots of water bottles.

I Googled deeply, it is NOT for sale. It is for donation to save Africa. Didn't you Google it?

WATERisLIFE has introduced a campaign to move into full production of The Drinkable Book™, and with your help, we can distribute the books as part of WATERisLIFE’s integrated water, sanitation and hygiene program to save lives and transform communities, as well as make the books available for global partner distribution. Please DONATE to help provide funding for research and development of The Drinkable Book™ to get it into the hands of those in desperate need of clean water.

    Quoting papaya1972:
both information about the invention and fake were from my Wechat friends posts.

I am not sure what to believe and not to believe these days about news and information from internet.

let's wait and see, time will tell the truth
I don't use webchat or QQ, or any chat or going any chatroom. I have Googled many times put in "Is Theresa Dankovich drinkable book fake?". But all the results came back saying the same that she spent 7 year to invent this drinkable book. She has her PhD from McGill University in Quebec, Canada. I used to have a pen-pal who studied his Master and PhD degrees at McGill University for many years while I was in Taiwan. I myself have been to McGill University campus too. It is a very famous university in Canada East coast.

I believe in Google information is accurate and don't believe some Chinese chitchats that are not responsible. I don't know what their intentions are, but Google has more reliable sources.

but just heard it was fake
and boiling water is much cheaper to achieve the same goal for clean drinking water
Where did you find it is fake? I have Googled many different sources of Dr. Theresa Dankovich that her invention will benefit billions of people in Africa and will extend to China.

In USA, we drink "running water".

It is so amazing. Many people in Africa died due to drinking those dirty water on the contaminated river water. I hope you Google it and view that video to understand Dr. Dankovich invention that can benefit so many people in many countries.

Dr. Theresa Dankovich invented a bactericidal silver nanoparticle paper, pAge, for her PhD in Chemistry at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She invented a “green” method to produce the silver nanoparticles, using cheap and benign chemicals and processing, and showed that the resulting papers worked in the laboratory. Following her Ph.D. she joined the Center for Global Health at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, United States. As part of the Water and Health in Limpopo project, she traveled to South Africa to test her pAge papers over the summer of 2013. The project included an interdisciplinary team that included faculty and students from engineering, medicine, and public health. In South Africa her team of students worked with the University of Venda and tested the pAge filters in the field, where they were effective in killing bacteria with minimal silver loss. Theresa is currently a postdoctoral researcher at Carnegie Mellon University in Civil and Environmental Engineering, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. Her current research pursuits involve looking at the impact of nanotechology and the end-of-life fate of nanotech in consumer products.
