BBC: China ignore revolution anniversary

The 50th anniversary of the start of the Cultural Revolution, which plunged China into a decade of chaos, has been met with silence in state media.

On 16 May 1966 Communist leader Mao Zedong began a campaign to eliminate his rivals. At the same time he called on Chinese youth to "purge" society.

Years of bloodshed and turmoil ensued, ending with Mao's death in 1976.

How to handle the era's contentious legacy has remained a challenge to China's Communist rulers to this day.

On Monday, the main state media outlets made virtually no mention of the anniversary, focusing on coverage of the South China Sea and other domestic issues. No official events were planned by the authorities to mark the 50-year milestone.

I understand people don't want to remember this massacre event for a decade in the past. Chinese government officials should "consciously", "sincerely", and "publicly" to admit and apologize for their huge mistake 50 years ago and most importantly, promise this kind of crime won't happen again. Government should "love" their people, NOT "control" their people. Don't kill intelligent people who have knowledge what is right what is wrong. Your government should NOT afraid of "opposite opinions", "opposite party", the criticism can improve the quality of a government. It is unimaginable that "cultural revolution" massacre last 10 years. Don't adore Mao as a god. Don't recite Mao's Red Book. Communist should change to Democratic system.

Chinese people are "silent lambs". They want to live, so they don't protest their government, such "cultural revolution" last 10 years. Those scholars didn't do anything against their government, but they were killed by whole bunch of ridiculous teenagers "Red Guards". I still don't understand why Mao wanted to kill intelligent people, their own people?? Why?? In USA or Taiwan, we reward intelligent people with high pay, good jobs.

I heard about Chinese government torture and kill "Falun Gong" people for many years. Did Falun Gong followers against China government? I thought Falun Gong followers are peaceful persons. There is a free Chinese newspaper in Southern California about their tragedies. I read some but NOT really study them. Probably another level of "culture revolution" because Falun Gong people has different belief and learning Kung-Fu martial arts. Anyone who has different religion or belief or learning martial arts will provoke Chinese government??? It is tyranny - one party, one voice, one policy. People can't protest, or have election to choose their leader. That's why I sympathize their people as "silent lambs".

I have emigrated to USA since 1980, so I have been here for 36 years. I am an U.S. citizen. According to U.S. Constitution Amendment One we have FREEDOM of Speech, FREEDOM of Religion and FREEDOM of Press. We can criticize our government, if we see any wrong doing. We have Presidential election to choose leaders in every 4 years. Taiwan has the same system, we can vote for new president. We have learned English since I was born. The movies and TV programs were all came from USA in English but with Chinese caption.

I was born and raised in Taiwan. When your country had suffered from Cultural Revolution (I was about teenager), we had enjoyed the similar freedom as Americans. That is why we are easy to adapt U.S. society and language.

I know the cruelty of 文革 for a decade that plunged your country's economy. People were suffered tremendously. The "Iron Curtain" closed from outside world. You couldn't learn English, you couldn't criticize your government. You didn't have FREEDOM. It is very sad, so sad.

Taiwan and China have been separated for 65 and 1/2 years. People's minds and thoughts are different so much for so many years. I sympathize Chinese people during 文革. 文革 was a BIG mistake. I am so very sorry. I hope 文革 won't happen again.

I sympathize Chinese people especially those had been killed and humiliated intelligent professors, principals, the owners of properties. It is very sad that their government used young teenagers, proletarians, to "purge" older and more intelligent people. I don't understand why their government wanted to kill their people. Why?? Why their government didn't like educated people?? Why??? Their government had "corruption system", bribery, .... Mao Zedong wanted people to adore him as a "God", so everywhere has his portrait pictures. His "Red Book" became "Bible" to recite till imprinted in people's brains. It is so sad. I am so sorry for their people. Their people didn't know the basic "Human Rights" to live.

The differences in between "Democratic (freedom world)" and "Communist" are we have elections to choose our leaders, we have at least two parties. The elected party will be watched by opposite party. In the freedom world, we don't "purge" people. In China, they only have one party that is "Communist". Whatever their government said, they had to follow, otherwise, they die. We have freedom to Google any news, any information, any knowledge, but they don't have the freedom. Their news have been censored, Google had been kicked out. Because their government are afraid of people to know the "TRUTH". People are afraid of their government.

I am lucky I was NOT born in that side of country. So I could finish my graduated pharmacy school and came to USA and enter California university and obtained California pharmacist license.

It was very sad to know the fact of "10 years of Cultural Revolution" started 50 years ago. Mao used those stupid little kids during their "rebellious ages" to "purge" their own parents. It was very sad to know so many intelligent and highly educated people die because they were educated. This was a true story for a decade. Nobody dared to stop these madness of young generation controlled by government. They have been brain-washed by Mao Zedong's Red Book. They had to recite that book over and over again until it imprinted in their brains. The government thought the intelligent people would concur government, so they "purged" those intelligent professors, principals, parents, .... by killing or humiliating them. Nobody dared to say anything because they would die. Those young kids didn't need to go to schools for education for those years. It was a chaos.

They didn't have the freedom of speech, freedom of religion and freedom of press. Everything had to follow the government that is why they are "Communist". They thought poor people could rob, steal, destroy, burned down, and kill the rich people and extended to 8 level of relatives. You just had to keep quiet or else you died.

There are so many sad stories I heard from their people, from newspaper and Google. Now, their government wanted to cover-up this 10 years tragedy and pretended nothing had happened. Not many of U.S. citizens know the truth of those 10 years Cultural Revolution". They became NOT cultured people.

I would like to know your opinion "Should Chinese government keep quiet what they have done during Cultural Revolution and let those professors, school principals, and property owners die in vain? Or should they investigate what had happened and give some fair share of compensation to those people relatives or descendants (if any left)?" Those "Red Guards" teenagers should be at their 60+ now. Do they feel guilty for what they have done? Do they have conscience?
