Metformin: Anti-Aging Diabetes Drug Can Extend Life To 120 Years, Experts Say

A cheap drug widely used for type 2 diabetes turns out to have anti-aging properties that can potentially allow humans to increase their lifespan by about 50 percent and live up to 120 years old. Earlier this year, researchers from Belgium tested the effect of metformin, a drug commonly prescribed for type 2 diabetes patients, on the roundworm C. elegans. They found out that it caused the worms to age slower and stay healthy for a longer time, adding about 40 percent to their average lifespan.

When mice were treated with the drug, they even developed stronger bones, The Telegraph reported.

Last year, a study done by researchers from Cardiff University and published in the journal Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism showed that metformin does not only help people fight the disease, but allows them to live longer as well.

"Patients treated with metformin had a small but statistically significant improvement in survival compared with the cohort of non-diabetics, whereas those treated with sulphonylureas had a consistently reduced survival compared with non-diabetic patients," the researchers reported in a 2014 press release.

Now, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has given the green light for researchers to proceed with a clinical trial, which will begin next year. The trial will involve 3,000 participants aged 70 to 80 years old from various U.S. locations. The trial is expected to run for five to seven years.

Professor Gordon Lithgow from the Buck Institute for Research on Ageing, one of the advisers for the trial, said that metformin could cause the progression of different diseases in the body to slow down.

"If you target an ageing process and you slow down ageing then you slow down all the diseases and pathology of aging as well. That's revolutionary. That's never happened before," he told The Telegraph.

FDA Director Dr. Robert Temple agreed that many age-related problems, such as dementia, eyesight loss, muscle tone loss and others could be addressed if the trial is successful.

"That would be something never done before. If you really are doing something to alter aging the population of interest is everybody. It surely would be revolutionary if they can bring it off," Temple said.

American Federation for Aging Research executive director Stephanie Lederman, who is also one of the advisers in the clinical trial, clarified that the study is not about "looking for a fountain of youth." She said they want to avoid that perspective and instead show that "what we're trying to do is increase health span, not look for eternal life," according to The Telegraph.

The clinical trial, called Targeting Ageing with Metformin (TAME) will begin next winter.

    Quoting  :

goannaoil,

You have misunderstood this Metformin. It can treat diabetic (blood sugar too high), but you don't necessary to be a diabetic to take Metformin. I am NOT a diabetic, but my pancreas releases Insulin when I eat. When pancreas release Insulin, it will tell your brain you are hungry. Metformin lowers the blood sugar in bloodstream without pancreas to release Insulin. So that you won't feel hungry.

Everything I eat and I have to go to toilet to defecate in 4 hours. It is like cleansing. No hungry feeling. I only eat one meal a day now.

The mechanism of Metformin works on non-diabetics to lose weight.

Metformin, sold under the trade name Glucophage, is used to treat diabetes, but several studies show that it also helps non-diabetics to lose weight by reducing hunger.

You may be overweight because your body makes too much Insulin, especially if you store your fat primarily in your belly. When you eat, your blood sugar level rises. The higher it rises, the more Insurlin your pancreas releases. Insulin makes you fat by acting on your brain to make you hungry, your liver to manufacture fat, and the fat cells in your belly to filol with fat. So the treatment for this type of obesity is to avoid foods that cause the highest rise in blood sugar and to take medications that prevent your blood sugar levels from rising too high. Avoid bakery products, pastas and all foods made from flour, fruit juices and everything with added sugar. Eat fruits and root vegetables such as potatoes only with meals.

Ater you eat, sugar goes from your intestines into your bloodstream, and then immediately into your liver. Then your liver releases sugar back into your bloodstream to cause your blood sugar level to rise. To keep blood sugar levels from rising too high, your pancreas release Insulin into your bloodstream. Insulin makes you hungry all the time and causes your liver to convert extra calories to fat and it constricts arteries to cause heart attacks. You need Insulin to kep blood sugar levels from rising too high to cause diabetes, nerve damage, heart attacks, strokes and kidney damage. Glucophage (Metformin) reduces sugar release sugar release from your liver to prevents blood sugar levels from rising too high, so your body doesn't need to produce as much Insulin that makes you hungry and cause your liver to make fat.

I am not a diabetes but I just want to lose weight for my daughter's wedding in May and her doctoral graduation in June. I feel Metformin makes me defecate more often than before. No other signs else. I don't feel hungry and only eat 1 meal a day now.

I have Taiwanese pharmacist license since 1977 and California pharmacist license since 1988.

I have taken Metformin since Feb 9th, 2017 just 13 days ago to reduce weight. I have to emphasize that my blood tests proved I am NOT a diabetes but the Endocrinologist specialist doctor prescribed Metformin 500mg take 2 tablets (=1,000mg) once daily.

My daughter's wedding day is May 20, 2017, so I wanted to lose some weight for her wedding. Also my daughter's doctoral graduation will be on June 6, 2017. She will be a MD but still needs to work for internship and residency.

For many years, I have tried Dr. Oz diet pills, e.g. Garcinia Cambogia and many others. Those diet supplements didn't work at all. I was very disappointed. Dr. Oz was on Capitol Hill to be questioned by Congressmen about his diet pills recommendation. None of those pills worked on me, so I quit.

I went to a diet clinic to get Vitamin B6 and B12 and Lipoprotein injection for 12 consecutive weeks but it didn't work. I spent over $800 for nothing. The doctor in that clinic then suggested me to eat low Carb and high in Protein. He wanted me to eat lots of meat, e.g. pork, beef, chicken, .... but no vegetable, no sugar, no flour foods, i.e. rice, noodle, bread, potato, tortilla, ...(food restriction) So, I became a meat-eater for quite a while. I gained more weight. That is the Dr. Atkins diet plan - lots of protein but low in carbohydrate. The plan failed. I waste money and time. I was disappointed even more.

This time I went to see the Endocrinologist and told him how frustrated I was. He ordered blood tests before Christmas. Then he had 3 weeks vacation in New Year of 2017. I finally got an appointment to see him again. I said I am not a diabetic, why you prescribe Metformin. He said take the medicine and come back again in a month. I Google "I am not a diabetic why MD prescribe Metformin for me to lose weight?" Wow, there are six answers. i read those explanations and started this Metformin as MD prescribed 13 days ago. I feel some changes, I don't feel hungry, I used to defecate once daily, then twice daily, now 3 times a day. I have one salad meal a day. MD said eat low carbohydrate with fiber, such as celery, but not taking foods that contain flour which has no fiber. So I followed his advice.

I keep searching deeper and found out Metformin not only can treat Type 2 diabetes but also an anti-aging pill which can extend lifespan to 120 years. I am very happy to share with you about Metformin information.

Although I haven't seen the weight lose result yet, but I am glad Metformin has anti-aging effect. I still have 3 months time before my daughter's wedding. Hope I will succeed this time.
