Analysis: Why won't Donald Trump condemn white nationalism?

Why doesn't President Donald Trump just unequivocally condemn white supremacists?

It's a jarring question to ask about an American president. But it's also one made unavoidable by Trump's delayed, blame-both-sides response to the violence that erupted Saturday when neo-Nazis, skinheads and members of the Ku Klux Klan protested in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Trump has faced such a moment before — one that would have certainly drawn swift, almost predictable condemnations from his recent predecessors, regardless of party. As a candidate and now as president, when racial tensions flared or fringe groups rallied around his message, Trump has shown uncharacteristic caution and a reluctance to distance himself from the hate.

At times, his approach has seemingly inflamed racial tensions in a deeply divided country while emboldening groups long in the shadows.

On Saturday, as Trump read slowly through a statement about the clashes that left dozens injured and one woman dead, he condemned hatred, bigotry and violence "on many sides." The president was silent when journalists asked whether he rejected the support of nationalist groups.

That silence was cheered by the white supremacist website Daily Stormer: "When asked to condemn, he just walked out of the room. Really, really good. God bless him."

Trump denies that he's racist or sympathetic to such groups. -in-law Jared Kushner, the grandson of Holocaust survivors, and Ivanka, who converted to Judaism, are among those who have defended the president against those charges.

Still, he has a history of engaging in high-profile, racially fraught battles.

Early in his career as a developer, Trump fought charges of bias against blacks seeking to rent at his family-owned apartment complexes. He long promoted the lie that the nation's first black president, Barack Obama, was not born in the United States. As a candidate, he proposed temporarily banning Muslims from the United States. He retweeted a post from accounts that appeared to have ties to white nationalist groups. And he was slow to reject the endorsement of former KKK leader David Duke.

Some of the president's friends and advisers have argued that Trump is simply refusing to bend to liberals' desire for political correctness. A boastful, proudly disruptive politician, Trump often has been rewarded for saying impolite and impolitic things. Some supporters cheered him for being someone who said what they could not.

Democrats frequently assert that Trump sees a political advantage in courting the support of the far right. Indeed, he has benefited politically from the backing of media outlets such as Breitbart or InfoWars. They have consistently promoted Trump and torn down his opponents, sometimes with biased or inaccurate reports.

Charlottesville's mayor, Democrat Mike Signer, said Sunday that Trump made a choice during his campaign to "go right to the gutter, to play on our worst prejudices."

"I think you are seeing a direct line from what happened here this weekend to those choices," Signer said on CBS' "Face the Nation."

White House senior adviser Steve Bannon ran Breitbart before joining Trump's campaign, and several of the president's other aides believe Bannon continues to have influence over the website. In "Devil's Bargain," a new book about his role in the Trump campaign, Bannon is quoted as saying that attempts by Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton to tie Trump to the alt-right and nationalists did not move voters.

"We polled the race stuff and it doesn't matter," Bannon said, according to the book.

But there no reliable public polling on the scope of Trump's support among those with white nationalist leanings or the percentage of the electorate they comprise. The reaction from Republicans following Trump's statement Saturday suggests there may be greater political risks for the president in aligning himself with bigoted groups.

"The president needs to step up today and say what it is," said Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., who was one of several GOP lawmakers urging Trump to be more strident in calling out the nationalists and neo-Nazis that gathered in Charlottesville. Gardner said plainly: "It's evil. It's white nationalism."

By Sunday, the White House was scrambling to try to clean up the president's statement. The White House issued a statement saying the president does condemn "white supremacists, KKK, neo-nazi and all extremist groups."

The spokeswoman who issued the statement refused to be named. And the president himself remained silent.

That left Vice President Mike Pence, traveling in South America, to offer the kind of comment Trump's critics sought from the White House: "We have no tolerance for hate and violence, white supremacists or neo-Nazis or the KKK. These dangerous fringe groups have no place in American public life and in the American debate, and we condemn them in the strongest possible terms."

You mis judged the writing... it simply complimented you on "knowing yourself"...
It is not mine to debate whether you believe in God or Not... that is an individual choice.
I pointed to factors that speak of "principles' which are examples a plenty in the bible, one can get what they can from them, or get nothing at all.. that too is an individual choice.

I will believe that which is best in my ideals to believe, as too .. so will you believe what is best in your ideals to believe.... I have no contention with that, nor will I make any contentions nor engage any contentions ... There's what, over 7 BILLION people on Earth... and they all believe "something"

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

beyond fantasy,

You don't need to preach me, I know god, devil, heaven and hell are non-existing. Muslim's god is Allah, Christian's god is just god. There are thousands of religion in the world. Every religion believe their god is the real god. That caused problems.

No need to stand on the corner of street shouting "Praise the Lord, God is the saver" for the thing is non-existed. No need to fight over which god is the real god because there is none. If prayer will work, I can pray to god my stock trading can be successful, the lottery ticket I bought can be the winner of millions, the exam that I am about to take will pass, .... God is just people's imagination to wishful thinking if you believe him (or her) you can go to heaven. Heaven will be too crowded with so many dead people. Bible teaches "Adam and Eve and a snake", "virgin Mary", ... are so ridiculous. We are adults, we know sex that bring the children to world. I believe in science not fiction. I don't need Bible to teach me "Golden Rule" because I know and I also "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" without the Bible.

Bible was written by people 2,000+ yrs ago. At that time people believed the Earth is the center of Solar system, the Earth is a flat land, .... How can you believe those people 2,000 yrs before? You know Galileo's finger had been cut off in 18th century because he said the Sun is the center of solar system. We are in year of 2017, do you still believe the Earth in the center and the Earth is flat??? I do believe dinosaurs exist 65 million years ago, I went to Utah 4 times and I saw their bones and skeleton. So, you believe human before dinosaurs because god created human??? I watched "National Geographic Channel" on TV and I believe "a huge meteorite crashed to Earth near the Gulf of Mexico. A giant meteorite, that caused the dinosaurs extinct because the meteorite huge impact burned down the plants that caused climate change, the veg-dinosaurs extinct first, then the meat-eater dinosaurs. Because we human are smaller and probably from Apes, hide in caves, small animals survived.

Different religions cause wars, arguments, over non-exist god they believe. They want to go to Heaven after death. I will remain in the Earth in an urn and all my breathing, thoughts will be stopped. There is no soul. My children will carry on their lives.

Don't need to preach me, I won't change. I was Catholic and Christian for 50 yrs, now I am an atheist/agnostic. I have good friends who are atheists, a Podiatrist, an Orthodontist, a bank CEO and a PhD physicist. Although they were Jewish, Catholic, but now we are proudly to be atheist/agnostic.

What's important is that you know whom you are, and you know what is good for the sake of good and what is not.

Not to get into along things about God as to if God is or Is not... Man has free choice in life...The bible teaches principles, and those principles show parables of demonstration of direction of action either with the principle or away from the principles. Youthful teaching helps people learn many things, of them, they learn what is "good and what is not" what promotes peace with other individuals and what does not.

As a society, we are of many, who do not know whom they are, and are easily led and misled... there are many ministeries who take advantage of peoples want and need to embrace and learn of the principles. One always has to be of care to know what is self serving and money grabbing and what is for the better good that utilize the principle to promote good as they see of what is good.

One can pray where they choose, a Church that is not only a money gathering mission is far different than churches that want to grow and build to increase their money intake, vs a Church that grows to do good and spread the world. Many Churches are "self serving".... as now we see many who move "outside" of communities, because they see no money in the community, and the problems in the community are greater than they have faith to deal with.. So they become Churches that serve themselves.
I have long stood in mind not to be absorbed to praise any pastor above the principles of God, nor to take them as any more than a man, who is either teaching via preaching or manipulating by the pretense of preaching, and is falsely self serving in what and how he teaches. Today, one can barely pass a empty store front without someone trying to turn it into a Church, and others trying to build the biggest Mega Church, as if the size will make them more powerful, when its aim is often times to make them more money, than to perform more outreach and do more good.

I don't get up on Sunday and rush out to Church, I can pray all through the day everyday.... and I can read very well and interpret what I read. That is not to say there are not some who can teach well.... as there is. But when institution focus on size for power to enrich their institution, it has ceased to be what it claims in many chases. One has to be always of "discernment" with what is... to know and understand what they believe to be true... one can only save ones own soul.
We can discuss more if you choose...

The world has many people and many ideals about the higher power, and in many it is called by many names and many "people" make many claims... None shall relive man of the point that death will come to his being. it is his soul that he must concern himself with... and that will guide the spirit of how he focuses his soul... One can learn of self... because the world is in a state of constant change. Therefore, again... I come back to the point... that "you know yourself" and you know what is good and what it not... Thus your learned and gained wisdom has brought you to discern when not to be misled, and when not to be fleeced ..... and you can give and do the good as you desire in the ways that make peace in your soul...

BeautifulKara, speaks often of the nature and spirit of giving. How she lives the rest of her life is her personal business.. it is what she choose to present of herself as one who choose to give for the sake of the good she feels is service to other mankind. Beyond that... I know nothing of her.. as to her personal daily interactive engagements, nor does it matter... as that is how and what she cares to share.

You speak of the pains that you've endured of many sorts, and through it you have maintained a sense of self, that chooses good over not good, and surely you give in your own ways that promote the good that your soul embraces and you as a person desires to do.

Your political views speak of "humanitarian good", civil accord to what it good and the need for Civility among mankind. You can see and address the vile of motivates of those who lead which goes astray and does not promote the greater good for the society as a broad whole.

beyond fantasy,

Where is god when Japan had 8.9 earthquake/tsunami/nuclear leak? Where is god when Katrina was submerged in water for a month? Where is god when a crime/murder was about to happen? Why the victim died but the perpetrator escaped? Bible is a terrible fiction written by people 2,000+ years ago. They made the stories that only to teach young children to be good. But we are adults, we know what is right, what is wrong. I was Catholic from birth to 32 under my mom's influence. I was Christian, when I was in marriage from 32 to 49 to give him green card, s.s.# because his influence. The pastor's wife use the church members' trust on her and told people to invest minimum of $50,000 per account. That was a "Ponzi Scheme". They used the latter's money to pay the front investors' interest. Then took away more than $20 - 30 millions and flee to Asia. Why god didn't stop pastor's wife to cheat on people?

All the "Religion" and "Politics" are very geographic related. If you live in Mid-East, majority are Muslims, or you probably will die or be threatened. If you live in India, you probably are Hindu, or people will pressure you. Because we live in USA, so most of people are Christians. If god is mighty, why we need to build church, temple, ... to pray. You can just pray at home. Church has many sales person to do business to social, to mingle with. Why those scammers using words "god-fear", religious to say he is a good person?? Because they know women are easy to be scammed if the guy said he is a religious person. I haven't seen god, heaven, devil or hell. Till then, I am an agnostic/atheist and I am a good person much better than those religious persons in disguise.

Politics is also geographic related. In North Korea, they have to be communists, or else, they die. In China, they are communists, one political party, one voice, they are a large country. They don't know "Democracy", "Freedom of Speech, Religion and Press". They live in an environment that controlled by their government, using Baidu, no Google, no YouTube video, no Gmail, no Google satellite Maps. You can't protest the government.

I am liberal, a Democrat because I agree with "Green Environment", "Global Warming", "Climate Change", using renewable energy, e.g. natural gas, solar panels (the Sun), wind power (wind turbines), geothermal (underground earth heat), ... just like Al Gore and Obama.

I don't want to change anyone, but don't want to be changed either. My mom passed, I am not Catholic, divorced my ex-husband, no longer a Christian. No more pastor, or his wife to scam me. No more hypocrite. I have my own thoughts, my own decision. I am an independent woman.

I have had 3 very good friends, an orthodontist, a bank CEO, a PhD physicist and they are atheists. The banker is a Catholic, but he doesn't believe in Bible or goes to church anymore. He just has good memory in church when he was a little boy. More and more highly educated people are atheists nowadays in USA according to the statistics.

As politics, when Trump's poll rating drop below 30%, he probably will resign. It is very difficult to impeach a president - Jeffrey Gundlach said 2 days ago.

I am glad that I was born in Taiwan and came to USA in 1980. I have same freedom. I don't need to worry about I am an atheist/agnostic, or a Democrat. I have my opinion. If you are so strong belief in god, tell him to appear in my dream to persuade me or make my pray work.

I have astigmatism eyesight, so I can't read the whole comment of yours. Only can read few lines of each paragraph.

I will not say there is no God, as I believe there is God...

What we see, have seen and continue to see, is the make of the non liberal, right wing white society, who continues to demonstrate their inability to live in a interactive multi-cultural society, and continues to want to deny others the rights and provisions the Constitution provides for All American People.

History has shown these Right Winger Minded types, who spent centuries "attacking not only minorities of every ethnic and racial make up", but also attacked "liberal minded white people as well".
History has shown clashes among ethnic white groups, one against the other, as well as; groupings of ethnic white people, who are non liberal minded, attacking every other minority groups.

Many of such types are "Johnny come lately to America", who came here in the 1800's and some even before; and most came from peasantry, serfdom, various European slums and out back regions, to the many "cut throat" environment, where they were born into a cast system, never to be anything beyond the class they were born into, many came with ideals and intents to usurp the American Constitution and its form of Governance, while chasing vanity and greed of every type.

They came to America with false ideals, thinking "money would make them some faux image of royalty... so they hoard and brought with them every criminal and greed driven motivations. Never knowing that Royalty was not about "having money", it was about people who were entrusted to protect the society and support the defense of society against threats. Money was only the tool that facilitated the ability to do so. Wealth was bestowed upon Royalty for the values they upheld to protect and promote the civility of society and build that it benefits society and to protect themselves from those who wish to do them harm from within.

We can see clearly why they had to have class designation, because of "the vile of the people", they had to be contained into status classes, and subdued under authoritarian rule, or they would create and promote havoc and threaten the kingdom from within. These same types wanted the benefits the Kingdom provided, but they did not want to pay into the support of it. Thus so, by containment and requirements they had to be remanded by status and forces of many sorts had to be enacted to mandate they contribute to the supports the society established, they enjoyed the benefits which it provided, and still resented having to contribute.

We see it in America, "they" brought that ignorance here, fighting the government, don't want to pay taxes, but they want the benefits of what society provides and then think that their white skin should give it to them without question or responsibility. The system had to be designed to demand they contribute to the system in which they live. They are still wild and vile, and want to control and claim what they contribute should only benefit them. They are without regard for the principles of Civility.

Civility is claiming and caring for one’s identity, needs and beliefs without degrading someone else’s in the process. Tomas Spath and Cassandra Dahnke, Founders, Institute for Civility in Government

These "Right Winger Types" simply can't and don't understand how to live in Civil Society..!!!! Such lack of understanding and the lack of concern to be understanding, is the attitude which bring out the "barbarianism of many sorts", which leads to the hoarding, vanity and greed... and they wage a continual fights against the civic structure of society, and they fight against the premise of civility in society and governance of our systems.
They want much, but seek to gain it by the abuse and disregard of others. Their "Sloth" has made them into many things that has tainted this nation for many decades upon decades.

Sadly, in the Early days of America all the way through the 1800's and 1900's many of such types were allowed to come into America; when the better system would have been to screen them for the sense of "Civility", if such had been done even as early as the 1600's, we'd not have the racist vile elements which exist in this nation.
Time will bring systems into society, which most may not desire, but systems will be developed to eradicate these who promote "In-Civility".

America does not have the Ethnic Blacks out trying to deny white or any other people the rights of the Constitutional Provisions.
Chinese are not out trying to deny white or any other people the rights of the Constitutional Provisions,
Mexican are not out out trying to deny white or any other people the rights of the Constitutional Provisions,
Other Asian, or Ethnic and Cultural People from around the world are not out trying to deny white or any other people the rights of the Constitutional Provisions.

It is only "a segment" of "Non Liberal Minded White Society" who continues to try to deny others The Rights and Privileges of the Constitutional Provisions within America.

Racism, ethnic hatred and cleansing and violence exist in every country. It's only magnified in the USA because of the utopian view that all men(women) are created equal and because the free (often politcal) press reports it live on TV... Imagine if the truth was told about what's happening in other countries...?

There are three big companies CEO resigned from "President's council".

The first CEO resigned is Tesla Motor Elon Musk when Trump retreated from "Paris Climate Change Agreement". The 2nd CEO resigned is Walt Disney Bob Iger same day as Mr. Musk resigned. Today the biggest pharmaceutical company, Merck CEO Kenneth Frazier (a Black) also announced to resign from President's Council this morning over the comment made by Trump on Charlottesville, Virginia incident.

The racial discrimination has been in U.S. history since White imported Blacks from Africa as slaves. The "Civil War" during President Abraham Lincoln. The "Jim Crow law", the segregation, ... mandated the segregation of public schools, public places, and public transportation, and the segregation of restrooms, restaurants, and drinking fountains for whites and blacks. The KKK (Ku Klux Klan), the White Supremacist, the racists, ... are in U.S. history. Nowadays, the White cops shot unarmed Black kids to dead are so often, it seems like not important news anymore.

Can anyone choose which parents to born from? If there is a mighty god, why can't he make all mankind's skin the same color?? speak the same language?? same religion belief?? no war?? so that we won't have misunderstanding, or racial discrimination, bias. Can we all get along?? Obviously, there is no god.
