Nathan Chen falls in Winter Olympics skating debut

United States figure skater Nathen Chen got off to a rough start at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea.

Chen, who is a favorite among skaters from the United States to win a gold medal, fell in his opening routine in the men’s team event Thursday night.

The 18-year-old wiped out in his fifth jump in his short program. He quickly jumped back up and finished the routine, ending with an initial score of 80.61. The United States earned seven points in the team event after the short program, and sits in fourth place.

His performance was apparently the “worst short program” that former United States figure skater Johnny Weir had ever seen out of Chen.

Chen said after that he thought it was just a mental issue, something he’s hoping to correct moving forward.

His Parents Moved to the United States from China in 1998

Chen’s parents were both born and raised in China and their experiences as immigrants have been the spark that drives Chen every time he steps onto the ice. He told ESPN:

There are a lot of cultural differences between Americans and Chinese, and I think that having both aspects be part of my life has helped me in a lot of ways, from an academic standpoint to an athletics standpoint. They came to the U.S. with not much, and it’s really inspirational to see how far they’ve come and how hard they worked for us. To be able to raise that many kids, and my dad was going to school at the time, just to listen to some of the stuff they’ve been through really motivates me.

Although Chen doesn’t remember his very first moment on the ice, his mother is quick to recount the memory, telling ESPN: “He didn’t want to leave. He just stood there and cried and cried.”

Chen’s parents were supportive of every athletic choice he’s made over the last decade and a half and there have been plenty. He first wanted to be a hockey goalie before turning his attention to figure skating and also had plenty of interests off the ice, including ballet, gymnastics and playing piano.

I am not an athlete. I don't ski, or skate, or swim, or any sport, but I like to watch Olympics (Summer and Winter).

I don't know "triple" or "quads" within a slip of second. I don't know the differences of Axel, Salchow, twist, toe loop, loop, flip, lutzs, .... the reporters know the differences.

Nathan Chan sounds like a Chinese decedent with U.S. citizenship. His "figure skating" performance wasn't good tonight. He still has chance to win for the next week.
