Federal government shuts down as Rand Paul protests budget deal

The federal government partially shut down for the second time in less than a month early Friday, as a protest by Sen. Rand Paul blocked lawmakers from voting on a budget deal.

Paul, a Kentucky Republican, said he was objecting to a two-year budget deal’s massive spending increases, which he and analysts say will result in higher deficits.

“Now we have Republicans hand-in-hand with Democrats offering us trillion-dollar deficits,” Paul said in a speech on the Senate floor. “I can’t in all honesty look the other way.”

The deal announced Wednesday by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer would raise overall spending caps by about $300 billion over two years.

In addition to suspending the debt limit until March 2019, the bill also funnels billions of dollars to infrastructure projects and efforts to fight the opioid crisis, and repeals a cost-control board set up by President Barack Obama’s health-care law.

The shutdown could be short-lived. McConnell told reporters a vote would be held at 1 a.m. But the House would also need to act, and a vote has yet to be set.

The bill doesn’t address immigration issues including protecting young, undocumented immigrants dubbed Dreamers. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi had demanded a vote on Dreamers before supporting the deal. House Speaker Paul Ryan said that he would bring an immigration bill to the floor that President Donald Trump supports.

Honesty is the best policy.

By now, Trump should know that it is not easy to be U.S. President.

Besides, Rand Paul is in his Republic party.
