2019 Rose Parade has 40 floats, 21 marching bands and a proud Jewish, LGBTQ queen The 2019 Rose Parade rolled out New Year's Day morning in familiar, comforting and decorative style, along with a twist of newness. Among the fresh touches were a grand marshal, Chaka Khan, who sang in the new year as the parade opened, and 101st Rose Queen Louise Deser Siskel, a future scientist in glasses who has proudly shared being Jewish and bisexual. The familiar heart of the Pasadena event brought together 40 floats, 21 marching bands and 18 equestrian units. The parade also served as a prelude to the Rose Bowl, this year pitting the Washington Huskies against the Ohio State Buckeyes. As it often does, the weather dawned clear and bright — like the postcard-style real estate promotion the parade was once intended to be. That sunshine followed a chilly night for campers along the 5.5-mile route. Overnight winds had been forecast to range from 25 to 45 mph, with gusts up to 65 mph. Temperatures dipped to the high 30s — not a record cold, but a chill made worse by the wind. With people stoking fires to keep warm, firefighters patrolled for windblown embers. China Airlines' "Rhythms of Taiwan" float won the "International Award" on 2019 New Year's Day. It was the 22nd time that CAL has won the international award for most outstanding float from outside the United States and the 28th award the airline has collected since 1987, the year CAL first participated in the parade held annually in Pasadena, California. The theme of CAL's float this year was Taiwan's temple culture, featuring drum arrays, performance troupes, and large figures representing the child-god San Tai Zi, which echoed the parade's theme, "The Melody of Life," CAL said. The hit song by Taiwanese band The Chairman, "The Gods Bless Taiwan," accompanied the float's display, and young dancers on the float played the role of drummers and holy officers in the world of the dead, according to CAL. Before I came to USA in 1980, I already watched Pasadena Rose parade on TV in Taiwan for a decade or more. I used to have "bucket list" to see the Rose parade on Colorado Blvd in Pasadena, California. I've worked and studied since I entered USA, watched Rose Parade on TV on New Year's Day. Until I got my first intern pharmacist job in Pasadena in 1983. My employer gave us 1984 New Year's Day off and said he would left the parking lot gate opened so that employees could park cars inside for free and walked to Colorado Blvd about 4 or 5 blocks to see the Rose parade. I told my mom, my aunt and my cousin this good news. My aunt and cousin came over to my apartment at 3 am and we drove to the pharmacy parking lot around 4 am. That was my first time to see Rose Parade on Colorado Blvd, so excited. Few days later, we went to see the floats that parked at a park again. When my two babies were toddlers, I took them to see floats parked at park for many years. I turned on TV for my two kids to watch Rose parade on New Year's Day when they were small. Rose Parade is a tradition on Colorado Blvd in Pasadena city, California on New Year's day. This morning I forgot to turn on TV and my son reminded me to watch Rose Parade. I have some problems to upload more Rose parade float pictures, so just uploaded 3 pictures for 2019. Honesty is the best policy.
