The Best Coronavirus Responses, Women Leaders

Looking for examples of true leadership in a crisis? From Iceland Taiwan and from Germany New Zealand, women are stepping up show the world how manage a messy patch for our human family. Add in Finland, Iceland and Denmark, and this pandemic is revealing that women have what it takes when the heat rises in our Houses of State. Many will say these are small countries, or islands, or other exceptions. But Germany is large and leading, and the UK is an island with very different outcomes. These leaders are gifting us an attractive alternative way of wielding power. What are they teaching us?

Truth

Angela Merkel, the Chancellor of Germany, stood up early and calmly told her countrymen that this was a serious bug that would infect up to 70% of the population. “It’s serious,” she said, “take it seriously.” She did, so they did too. Testing began right from the get-go. Germany jumped right over the phases of denial, anger and disingenuousness we’ve seen elsewhere. The country’s numbers are far below its European neighbors, and there are signs it may be able to start loosening restrictions relatively soon.

Decisiveness (see the chart)

Among the first and the fastest responses was from Tsai Ing-wen in Taiwan. Back in January, at the first sign of a new illness, she introduced 4 measures block the spread without having resort the lockdowns that have become common elsewhere. She is now sending million face masks the U.S. and Europe. Tsai managed what CNN has called “among the world’s best” responses, keeping the epidemic under control, still reporting only six deaths.

Jacinda Ardern in New Zealand was early lockdown and crystal clear on the maximum level of alert she was putting the country under – and why. She imposed self-isolation on people entering New Zealand astonishingly early, when there were just 6 cases in the whole country, and banned foreigners entirely from entering soon after. Clarity and decisiveness are saving New Zealand from the storm. As of mid-April they have suffered only four deaths, and where other countries talk of lifting restrictions, Ardern is adding to them, making all returning New Zealanders quarantine in designated locations for days.

Tech

Iceland, under the leadership of Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir, is offering free coronavirus testing all its citizens, and will become a key case study in the true spread and fatality rates of Covid-19. Most countries have limited testing people with active symptoms. Iceland is going whole hog. In proportion to its population the country has already screened five times as many people as South Korea has, and instituted a thorough tracking system that means they haven’t had to lock down or shut schools.

Sanna Marin became the world’s youngest head of state when she was elected last December in Finland. It took a millennial leader to spearhead using social media influencers as key agents in battling the coronavirus crisis. Recognizing that not everyone reads the press, they are inviting influencers of any age to spread fact-based information on managing the pandemic.

Love

Norway’s Prime Minister, Erna Solberg, had the innovative idea of using television to talk directly to her country’s . She was building on the short, 3-minute press conference that Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen had held a couple of days earlier. Solberg held a dedicated press conference where no adults were allowed. She responded to ’ questions from across the country, taking time to explain why it was OK to feel scared. The originality and obviousness of the idea takes one’s breath away. How many other simple, humane innovations would more female leadership unleash?

Generally, the empathy and care which all of these female leaders have communicated seems to come from an alternate universe than the one we have gotten used to. It’s like their arms are coming out of their videos to hold you close in a heart-felt and loving embrace. Who knew leaders could sound like this? Now we do.

Now, compare these leaders and stories with the strongmen using the crisis to accelerate a terrifying trifecta of authoritarianism: blame-“others”, capture-the-judiciary, demonize-the-journalists, and blanket their country in I-will-never-retire darkness (Trump, Bolsonaro, Obrador, Modi, Duterte, Orban, Putin, Netanyahu…).

There have been years of research timidly suggesting that women’s leadership styles might be different and beneficial. Instead, too many political organizations and companies are still working to get women to behave more like men if they want to lead or succeed. Yet these national leaders are case study sightings of the seven leadership traits men may want to learn from women.

It’s time we recognized it – and elected more of it.

Facing an aggressive Beijing, Taiwan's president issues a warning to the world

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen has sent out a warning to Asia in the face of mounting aggression from Beijing.
In an exclusive interview with CNN, Tsai said the military threat posed by China was growing "every day" in line with a more assertive foreign policy under its President Xi Jinping.
"If it's Taiwan today, people should ask who's next? Any country in the region -- if it no longer wants to submit to the will of China, they would face similar military threats," said Tsai.

Taiwan and China are separated by fewer than 130 kilometers (81 miles) at their closest point.
For seven decades, the two have maintained an uneasy truce following their split at the end of a destructive civil war in 1949.
Unification is a long-term aim for China's ruling Communist Party, which considers self-governed democratic Taiwan -- an island of 23 million people -- to be a renegade province.
But it was the election of Tsai and her historically pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in 2016 which sent relations between the two governments spiraling.

Beijing has placed mounting diplomatic and economic pressure on Taiwan, conducting live-fire drills in nearby seas and flew H-6K bombers and surveillance aircraft around the island.
"With China becoming increasingly strong and ambitious, we are faced with growing threats," Tsai said.
"Our challenge is whether our independent existence, security, prosperity and democracy can be maintained. This is the biggest issue for Taiwan."
Taiwan's unofficial ally the United States has for decades acted as the island's security guarantee against the threat of Chinese military action. But when asked directly, Tsai wouldn't be drawn on whether she believed US President Donald Trump would come to her aid.
Instead the Taiwan leader said she is focused on strengthening Taiwan's own defense capabilities in the face of an "imbalanced war," as China's military modernizes.
"We have to be prepared at all times," she said.

Taiwan is NOT China, Taiwan is Taiwan. We have our own flag, national anthem, constitution, passport, democracy bipartisan system, presidential election (4 yrs, 2 terms), freedom of speech, religion and press. You should come to Taiwan and compare for yourself.

Our semi-conductor industry is the world best. I own Taiwan Semiconductor stock because the CEO and Founder, Mr. Morris Chang was graduated from Harvard University and Stanford University (Ivy League). Taiwan Semiconductor always either #1 or 2 in the world. Huawei smartphone needs the chips from Taiwan Semiconductor, if Taiwan stopped the supply to China, Huawei will be out of services. Do you know that?

Foxconn makes iPhone, iPad for Apple, Inc. Foxconn CEO, Mr. Terry Gou is a Taiwanese who went to China to build the factory and manufacture Apple's products. If Foxconn moved its factory back to Taiwan, the China employees will be unemployed. Do you know that? Don't underestimate Taiwan.

I also own Advanced Micro Devices stock because its CEO, Lisa Su was born and raised in Taiwan and was graduated from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). If you look its stock chart, you will know what I said. My Desktop computer is Acer is also made in Taiwan and inside chips are Advanced Micro Devices.

I was born and raised and educated in Taiwan before 19'80. I have been in USA for 40 yrs. I am proud to be a Taiwanese-American. I bought stocks that are Taiwanese and USA companies. I have good profits from Amazon and Google which are American companies. I am a swing trader, buy and sell stocks depends on its chart RSI (Risk Strength Index). When RSI under 30, I buy the stock (make sure it is a good stock), sell the stock when RSI is over 70. Buy low, sell high. Gradually buy and gradually sell.

I made money using my professional knowledge and judgement. No greedy at high, no fearful at low.

The more China Xi and W.H.O. Tedros attack Taiwan, the Taiwan's president Tsai Ing-Wen gets more reputation from the world.

I don't understand the logic of CCP and Tedros, the more threaten, vilify, insult toward Taiwan, the more Taiwan's reputation can be seen in the world.

When the people who don't know what is right, what is wrong will go down the hill.

I have said many times that Hong Kongers and Taiwanese are lucky who were NOT born and raised in China and escaped from been brainwashed by CCP. I have been attacked many times by Chinese FriendFinder Chinese bloggers here many times. I have my principles, my dignity, my professional judgement. One day people will understand me.
