Money and Life.. Report: Money can buy you happiness, to a point By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID WASHINGTON – They say Money can't buy happiness. They're wrong. At least up to a point. People's emotional well-being - happiness - increases along with their income up to about $75,000, researchers report in Tuesday's edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. For folks making less than that, said Angus Deaton, an economist at the Center for Health and Wellbeing at Princeton University, "Stuff is so in your face it's hard to be happy. It interferes with your enjoyment." Deaton and Daniel Kahneman reviewed surveys of 450,000 Americans conducted in 2008 and 2009 for the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index that included questions on people's day-to-day happiness and their overall life satisfaction. Happiness got better as income rose but the effect leveled out at $75,000, Deaton said. On the other hand, their overall sense of success or well-being continued to rise as their earnings grew beyond that point. "Giving people more income beyond 75K is not going to do much for their daily mood ... but it is going to make them feel they have a better life," Deaton said in an interview. Not surprisingly, someone who moves from a $100,000-a-year job to one paying $200,000 realizes an improved sense of success. That doesn't necessarily mean they are happier day to day, Deaton said. The results were similar for other measures, Deaton said. For example, people were really happier on weekends, but their deeper sense of well-being didn't change. Kahneman, a Nobel Prize winning psychologist, and Deaton undertook the study to learn more about economic growth and policy. Some have questioned the value of growth to individuals, and Deaton said they were far from definitively resolving that question. But he added, "Working on this paper has brought me a lot of emotional well-being. As an economist I tend to think Money is good for you, and am pleased to find some evidence for that." Overall, the researchers said, "as in other studies of well-being, we found that most people were quite happy and satisfied with their lives." Comparing their life-satisfaction results with those of other countries, the researchers said the United States ranked ninth after the Scandinavian countries, Canada, the Netherlands, Switzerland and New Zealand. The research was supported by the Gallup Organization and the National Institute on Aging. There's only so many hours in a day, and some many things, one has time to deal with, so no matter how much you buy, you may find you have less time to deal with it. one could have a 10,000 sq ft closet, but they can only wear so many clothes at a given time, or 20-100 cars, but can only drive one at a time. The clothes will get old, the cars, require maintenance expense, and they depreciate in value over time, it may take them 30 years to rise in value if they are kept in good conditions. Traveling, can take one many places but, one can only be in one place at a time. There are many good works one can create with Money, it appears when one has their Money working, and it produces things that are socially beneficial, it may inspire them in ways, more than just having wealth, and doing nothing with it. some simply like to party, and some may like to do many things. Beyond all that Money can do, it still becomes a matter of one actually liking themselves, and having positive social interactions. There has been many very wealthy people to die miserable, alone, and some even have gone mad, and some have a rich family life, and seem to grow into their older years, surrounded by things that have more value than all the Money they amassed. There have been starlets, sports players and many professionals in a wide variety of fields,, who have lost everything behind the opulence of image and status, in recent years, we have seen some who had their natural god given beauty, to have monstrosities of faces, from a massive amount of plastic surgery, some have destroyed the natural breast, with botched implants, and found maybe less happiness than they had before they ventured so far. Some people claim they were more happy when they had less and worked hard than when they had more than they need, and excesses far beyond what they could actually utilize. Recently we have seen a variety of billionaires, give their Money to endeavors of various sorts, to spend it for the benefit of others. One even stipulated that the Money could not be used for anything that earns more Money, only for what benefits the service that provide for people. Some people chase to marry wealth, and then complain about not having the mate at home, and some complain about having the mate at home and having less Money, seems in the expanse of the world, the ideals about Money, life, love and happiness, has many perspectives. We've seen Lotto winners, find more disaster than happiness, and some find means to improve their lives and find balance in doing so, some become penniless in a short span of time. We see some who spend their youth and beauty, chasing Money, and find age with many health problems are a face and body covered by wrinkles, and void of having know and shared loving. Some have found Money brought plots to end their life, and mates have killed each other or, one or the other has had the other killed or some tragic things. some have ran their mates mad, to claim the wealth, and some have committed their own parents to institutions, to take their Money. some even have killed their own parents for the sake of Money. Bodies and claims of love has been sold for Money since the beginning existence of Money. Kings have raided other kingdoms for Money, and wars have been fought in every place for the grasp of Money, people enslave other for Money. Human lives are snuffed out, to sell body parts for Money. Graves have been robbed for Money, along with the fact, any thing one can imagine to think, someone has done it for Money.. |
