a change from the past

(from news)
By ALEXA OLESEN

The leaf-strewn median on Eternal Peace Road hides a grim secret: Numerous tiny fetuses lie in unmarked graves dug by women from the abortion clinic across the street.

The staff at the small clinic in the heart of this ancient city don't bury most of the fetuses — only those that have reached three or four months, when they clearly resemble miniature babies.

"This big," says anesthesiologist Liu Jianmin, using her thumb and index finger to measure out the length of a lipstick tube. The burials are a gesture of respect for lives cut short, she adds, and the patients aren't told.

It is a secret hiding in plain sight, much like the rising rate of abortions among young, unmarried women in China.

While comprehensive data are hard to come by, official figures show abortions are increasing, and Chinese media and experts say many, if not most, of the abortion-seekers are young, single women.

That's a change from the past, when abortion was used mainly to enforce the government's one per couple limit. Today, students are clearly a base: The Beijing Modern Women's Hospital offers a government-subsidized "Safe & Easy A+" discount abortion package at 880 yuan ($130). Others advertise in college handbooks.

According to a government tally, 9.2 million abortions were performed in 2008, up from 7.6 million in 2007. But the count only includes hospitals, and state media report the total could be as high as 13 million. If accurate, that would give China among the highest abortion rates in the world.

Many blame the trend on newly liberal attitudes toward premarital sex, and lagging sex education. Bureaucratic red tape and social stigma also deter single women from having a on their own, and laws bar women from marriage until they are 20, making pregnancy virtually unheard of. These factors and a lack of stigma surrounding abortion, or "artificial miscarriage," as it's known here, have helped make it a relatively cheap, widely available option for birth control.

"The moral outrage over having a before marriage in our society is much stronger than the shame associated with abortion," said Zhou Anqin, the manager at the clinic in Xi'an, which performs about 60 abortions each month, mostly on students aged 24 or younger.

The two-story facility, which opened in 2007, is one of five operated in China by Marie Stopes International, a London-based not-for-profit group that runs hundreds of clinics globally promoting safe abortions, HIV testing and other services. The fetuses that aren't buried are discarded as medical waste, as they are in the United States and other countries.

yes, you are right, I personally do not understand why society has such disdain for women having children.. even families act like its a crime for a girl to have a baby. that's how much the world has become a place where no one wants to help anyone. and some families and communities beat the girls down as if she is nothing, just because she is giving birth to a new life. that is how selfish the world has become.

It's so bad, that people have girls so full of fear, they even toss babies in trash bins, or they are so terrified they are driven to do so many things, they would not do, if they know society would simply respect them as a mother.

I also think, any teen girl that has a baby, should be afforded an opportunity for a job, and that should be an exemption of claiming she has to be 21 to work here or there. She is a mother, she should be able to work any place that there is work to be had.

If I had a daughter, I don't care what age she has her child, I'm not going to treat her like dirt and demean her as if she is the worst person on the planet, and make her life hell.. and many parents do this all to so call protect their so called "community image", which means their own ego and status pursuit is more important to them, than the value of their own daughter and their grandchild. I think such a parent is the worst type of hypocrite.

My friend had her child when she was 15, she had love from her mother and help from her family, she advanced in her job, and raised her daughter, she took computer training education course just a couple years ago, and her daughter just graduated from college, and the man she married treated her daughter with the same care and appreciation that he treats his own, they have the two daughter, now the older one has a career, and the mother has advanced still in another company.
This is the power of support... but so much of society is so ignorant, they beat women down for the most natural thing in the world, and that is the giving of birth.

While all these billionaires are giving away their money, why don't they set up places for these young pregnant women to get support and help until they can have their baby, and get employed and they will find a way to make it, because they have a great spirit of determination to move forth if they are not mentally beat down and made to feel as if their life is over, just because they had a baby.

I don't see a problem being with a woman who has children, as long as she is sure she wants to be with me, and not still pining for the baby's father. when these girls get over the babys father, if he is not there, and actually love the man that choose them, they can do fine.
and if the family is going to treat her like crap, then she needs to get away from them, because it is not healthy for her or the baby, and when the baby grows if the girls parents wake up and act respectful of her, then it is fine if she joins back with them. but she should not have the struggle of raising her baby, and having to be beat down and treated like crap by the family while doing so.

China as well as many other countries should get off this obsession about "saving face kick", and acting like their daughter is some commodity to sell to the highest bidder, and then treating her like trash if she happens to have a baby. to me, I think its pure selfish social ignorance to treat their own daughter such ways.

A child should be of legal status, far and beyond any concern as to whether the Mother is married or not.
China is not doing itself any favor with all the massive building, while at the same time make some of the worst humane atrocities imaginable, by these policies. If it wants to do something, why not expand building in some of the provinces that need building, instead of stacking everything on top of the other stuff. that is nothing but a recipe for future disaster. It also is doing the same thing this country is doing by the neglect of 'farming and elevating the status of farming as an again respectable business of and for common citizens, rather than making it a muli-prong giant monster of a corporate dominated model. skyscrapers don't feed people, like growing food does.
But, with the over-production in China, there is a hidden secret no one wants to talk about, and that is 'toxic waste and dumping, even countries smaller in production has a problem with waste dumping of chemical by products, but China is keeping its mess in these regards hidden.

It's already noted also, that the population is fast aging, but the disregard for new life only worsen the aging situations, and time will bring realization to these matters as well. then there is the matter of psychological health of a nation. Money has already shown that the impacts of psychological things, is eating away at the core, with stress and disparity mixed in with the glittering glass mountains of buildings, is like a cancer in the core of the building boom. The further making of the worlds slaves of its people, is not helping anything either. they are exporting slave labor products. but no one wants to call it what it is. Other nations run there, and claim cheap labor, but what that means is 'slave labor, where other countries don't have to feel guilty as slave masters, because they have china doing that part for them, by an oppressive regime, and imposing low wages, so the wealthy can become more wealthy. It still become in principle - a system of slavery. people locked in factory dormitories, is no different than a slave quarter, people working with harsh conditions is nothing but indentured servitude, with little reward and no means to change the conditions.

the reality is hidden behind the hype of material construction, but desolation lies only a matter of blocks from the towering buildings, and people packed in multi high rises, like hamsters in a cage compound.
The slightest disruption in food availability, power outages, or water disruptions, will turn it all into one of the worlds greatest disaster systems. Eventual the baby disposal will create its own set of negative impacts. Capitalism is now the force, that has changed the face of communism in the cities, but the brutal forces still dominate the lesser Money capitals.. and this will continue to be a source of contentions as well as challenges.

World policy, is equally so, something eventual China will have to face, but it covers it up at this time, because the global nations looks to China with blind eyes, to keep their accessibility to the slave labor pools.
