Country Style / Rural Town Living

With the broad expanse of Urban Living, we gain many conveniences, but we lose many connections with natural things.

Growing as a , we had the farm animals along with our own garden... still we utilize the grocer for certain things. But we knew exactly what the animals looked like and how they function in the environment... rather than only knowing them by the label stating which animal the meat was from.

In those years the biscuits were homemade, the cornbread homemade, and the vegetables came from the garden, even during this time, people were delighted to share the things they grew with the families and the extended family members. It was great pride in the growth of these various produce items. The eggs were fresh; people even knew how to remove eggs from the nest so the Hen would continue to go there, by leaving a few. Even in some locations people had water well, with good fresh water, some location had natural spring water.
Even when people would butcher a Pig, they would gladly share portions and some people took great pride to make sausage and share those with others. Most of the sharing was done without a fee and no interest in attaching a cost factor. People would can their fruits in glass jars and everyone knew that "Mason" made the best jars for this purpose. Pickles to Fruits were put in these Jars, we had homemade Jelly and Homemade Jam, and there were other people who made homemade syrup.

We did not seem to have families starving in this Country Community. Anyone could raise Chickens and anyone could plant a garden. As we grew our own 'popcorn' and the tomato's were amazingly delicious. The cucumbers were far better than these types they sell in the current day markets.

We could go about and pick peaches and plums, pears and apples and there was no such things about 'what they cost per pound"... either we had the trees or neighbors had the trees. During the day it was simply a matter of what type of fruit one wanted to pick. It became fun, because we used various sticks, to get the ripen one from the high parts of the tree. The only thing was the older people did not want us to beat the tree harshly, but gently to get the fruit to fall.

Then there were the cousins who had the Pecan trees, during the summer, it was easily to walk down the road and see 'berries' growing beside the roadway.

I think the concept of City may have diminished the appreciation for the vast expanse of things nature provided freely... some only required labor, and the forethought to save seeds for the next year.

I do understand in older times, people had 'smokehouses".. Where they would cure their meat and hang it there, so during the winter months they could simply go there, cut off what they want and use it to prepare breakfast or dinner.

On Sunday Morning before Church, we had robust breakfast, with Steak or Pork Chops, rice and gravy, with the best homemade biscuits with your choice of jelly or jam.

Then as we'd walk to church... and have a great time doing so, sometimes after church, we'd ride home, if it was not too hot, we'd walk back home, the treat was to stop at the store and buy various candy.

It was interesting things within the life during these times. Generally on Sunday evening people would gather at one relative or the others home and make a family and friends gathering.
Many times this was a similar gathering of often times the same people on Saturdays... Sometimes, various families might have a party, or a 'wiener roast"... where we'd take the coat hangers and roast their wieners over and open flame. The men played dominoes or cards, and the women would talk or play cards...

today, so much is about 'money and the pursuit of money', until people don't take the time to simply live.

There was no such things as us, as sitting in the house all day watching TV... that was something you do in the prime time hours, after schools there were a few shows that came on like 'Superman and such. But when the show was over (30 min.) it was outside to find something to do... and there was always something to do.

The men generally had some knowledge of repairing their cars; they'd take care of their livestock and often times the women tended the gardens during the day... Because not all women had out of the home jobs, and even those who did, because some were domestic helpers, they came home took care of their gardens and their own home.. They knew how to sew, they knew how to cook and they seems to always find ways to have time to interact with the . Often times in the early evening, people would take their pause to relax on the porch and simply just be social people.

If someone was driving in the neighborhood, generally someone knew who they were, they'd wave, we'd wave and we never heard stories of someone molesting , abducting and such things. There were no gangs, and almost all had a bicycle.

Mothers had the answers to the things and concerns of the , and their sense of love was in their manner of living and being, they had excellent time management skills... and never did they need a programmed course to figure it out. they did not need elaborate spreadsheets to know the needs of the family and how to prepare for challenges. They were so skilled, at a moments' notice when necessary they could have all the and themselves ready to go, if there was somewhere the family needed to go.

We did not have high income, but we had what was needed to provide a comfortable life, because what we did not produce, the income would step in, we did not have rent, because the house was built by My Great Grandfather, we simply had electricity and gas... later when the Phone was install we had that. Then the water company put in a water system. The car was not new, but a good used car would suffice, it was appreciated with no less delight than if it was factory new. The cars were washed at home and waxed in the yard, generally on Saturdays.

We'd take trips by car, relatives would take trips to come and stay with us, either way, people made room and found ways to accommodate each other.

How Amazing, the wonder of it all... I often wonder how did time move us from the grace of these things, for the concept of the idealistic captions painted on the TV and Created in the Cities.

Media promoted by every means the city life, as time passed families left these setting and headed for the cities.

In the cities, everything is 'dependent on money"... we truly have no concept of this level of dependency until disaster strikes, either by power outages, or other natural calamities. We have become less resourceful... and thus this feeds the need to purse more money not only for basic maintenance of living, but to store up to cover any despair brought on by disasters or challenges.

Over time... along came the computer... Now lives are invested in these units both in the home and one the go... actual faces are seen less, and profile on the web along with social media sites and then there's the twitter for the casual banter, that use to be accompanied by actual smiling faces and the look and feel of laughter. Now, to laugh, people 'type" lol....

We did not have to go through a mass of text to tell people whom we are, nor to give explanations about our character, we knew these things from real live interactions..... Yet, today, people will be deceptive quickly simply because technology making methods for communication, of which people take it to make games and be deceptive... rather than appreciate it as another convenience to the benefit of communicating.

What have we lost, among the things we've gained.. ??

How do we re-connect these things.... Now corporation farming seems to make it difficult to consider growing any vegetables or raising livestock and city ordinances will not allow such things in many urban settings. It would not be practical for people to have a back yard full of farm animals.... As a , we watched at about 6pm the chickens would naturally find the trees or some type of bush and they'd turn in for the evening... they were generally up at dawn, and the rooster sounded the 'great day" summation, and the early morning sunrise was an appreciated mellowness of the mornings glory.

Walking to and from school was fun.... we bundle up when it cold and rainy and delight in the short sleeves and light clothing when it was hot.

Walking home provided time to reflect and appreciate the environment....time to talk, joke and just enjoy some moments of silence mixed in....

so many things, make up what becomes "us'... as individuals.
