What would you do when times are bad as now?

The global economy is going through a very difficult phase now. I'm trying to be prudent in my spending and also teaching on a part-time basis. What would you do during this trying time?
Get a part-time job
Be more thrifty in spending
Sell something online
Cut up all your credit cards

I do all choices. You have to work and the only way to eat and pay bills is with money. Cutting back on anything and everything.

Can we pick more than one? I would not cut up the credit cards. But I would use them more carefully as well as be more thrfty with spending. There's the national economy, and then there's your "personal" economy. Spending less and finding additional income wherever you can are both good choices.

Hi All/ Chloe
Nice to Meet you! I've had not worked FT after my divorce on purpose since I wanted to start my own business. I didn't qualify unemployment anyway since my last employer had me as a commission only contractor. So no Unemployment taxes were paid for me to the State. So I'm running a small time antique business at the Waterfront Antique Mall in WA state, renting glass cases and reselling things I had laying around the house, like my Kimonos and Obis, jewelry that I don't wear anymore. I've also consigned to shops, some clothes, unused wallets, cute nick nacks and jewelry too.

I feel people can open up home business like selling Avon, Amway (Which I've done 15 years ago), Mary Kay, Noveir, vitamins, etc.

many ideas are many things, but fact bearing upon function is related to ones ability to earn an income. If that is impacted in the downward spiral, then the conditions of the situation will dictate many things. One cannot force an employer to regard and pay more, and depending on the situations, if one has to maintain income and work hours becomes a challenge to pursuing other options. It then is a matter with many factors.
what we can't afford to do, is cease to dream, and we can't afford to cease to plan. but we are propelled to learn.. and some of that learning is learning what we can live without of material things. We can RE-LEARN the difference in our wants and our needs. but we also can come to terms with self in ways to realize that with or without material convenience that meet our wants, we learn to manage and utilize the material conveniences which help us maintain our needs in the most efficient manner as possible.

We also learn the maintenance cost of the things we grasp out of pure want, when the earning is less that what it takes to maintain it without much concern and with relative ease when the income is sufficient to do so.

Our greatest problem in society is we worship the wealthy and fear speaking up as a collective to take the greed out of process. Public companies are public monies, and when people stop grabbing for greed, they can see the shams and know the difference between value and pumped propaganda for brokers and traders to destroy the fabric of industry. We lost the ability to pay attention. Our education system is training clones.. and it is producing systemic failure in every industry, because they are all trained the same. Nothing of human compassion, social concerns of civility of community maintenance is of any interest to the trained goons of the Ivy League demeanor. they are taught to indenture people to corporations, because they feel themselves as the elite and thus, by the process of plutocratic function, they usurp both democracy and any other political modeling of social governance, and convert systems into plutocracies. We the people, sit silent and say nothing, but mostly we are unaware of the political science of social function and the impact of money in taking the power of civil regard from our system. Today we live by corporate definitions about who we are and how we are to live. they make us pill junkies, and gulttons by their commercial push. We don't know the value of the tools in society, we have turned cell phones into status symbols, and we let idle chatter occupy our days and we even kill ourselves trying to text and drive.. the absurdity of our lack of understanding of how to use and utilize technology, instead we become like addicts, waitng for the fix of another text to come through.

people walk around with the phone in their hand, as a security blanket, and when they don't know what else to do, they start pushing buttons and claim it is being busy.

We lost the value of labor, because vain corporate heads have convinced the populations that they are the only reason companies prosper. Yet, not one executive could do the job of the laborer, but they can't do their own job, for jousting about vanity and ego.. and destroy companies and disrupt lives.
the worst thing ever to happen to business is to label one as a CEO and then to bring in people who claim themselves an MBA...
the CEO lives by the stock ticker, and the MBA wants to try and squeeze 1000% from a penny... and both are destructive forces.
CEO have no guts and no awareness of the evil they support and create., They don't understand that stock markets were designed for LONG TERM investing, so that companies can use collective resources, to stabilize and modernize and support the stability of their production process and manage stability within their sales with managed growth.
it has been turned into a spin and flip not unlike a roulette casino game. The result is lives are destroyed, companies are looted and sold by game makers in the stock rooms, playing inflated value games until they destroy any potential for the corporate to manage it production and distribution, then it is sold off in parts.. while the greatest pyramid game in the history of mankind is played out with support from the 24/7 news, which now is nothing more than a promotion machine of greed and robber barons.

We are made to eat slop shaped like food... because the stock ticker said you can't have natural ingredients. so we become walking toxic entities, unaware that the thirst for more by those who have been wrongly placed in leaderships. We are led by vain ignorance and ego delusion of self grandeur... and we wonder why our society and systems are in chaos and the mobs are increase in every place around the globe. but the masses won't listen nor will they learn.. they only think of their own greed, and ignore the support for reform, regulatory governance, and civic regard for state and community.

money has become the gods of fools and people follow like sheep being led to the shaving pen, and then transferred to the slaughter, while some are sent back out to pasture, to grow more wool. Only to be set up for a new shaving withing a short span of time.

Retirement is a delusion and the funds managers who play games with the saving of others, bleed and profit while time erodes the value of what a worker has though they were saving. By the time they take it out, their health is so bad, their saved resources are consumed in health maintenance, and they find they are not better off in the long span, because their saving is not enough to cover the long term they will need care and medical services. Our society of economic function was long ago modeled after Royalty taking control over the peons, and now we claim heads of companies as kings, and now we have a battle of faux kings, destroying the kingdoms across the globe.

EZ's logic is good for learning to profit in the world. beyond it all economics makes economies ... we simply have to know when we have a sufficient gain to not take UN-needed risk... then we can manage our mentalities where desperation does not bring us to the acts of self defeat. If we manage and think things through, we can gain without destroying anything in the process.

EZ, what you state is real... but what is good, you can and do clearly define what you want.
I would like to have 10 rental houses, they don't have to rent for more than 700+ each, ( for low to moderate income people) but I want them to be paid off before I'm 65. it would be great to add in a few rentals with over 2000 each monthly income. I want them managed via a rental management service. The aim is to have my house paid off, and to have a place in one the Asian Locations that I like ( paid for). With the means to fly there when I want to, and to stay there as long as I want to. I agree with you about the car, I don't need a new car, but I do think a used Benz is the best buy, because they don't break down too frequently.
I want a "for profit" business income to be progressive, but I also want the business to be a strong supporter of my own "non-profit organization".
It would be great to have a small farm, that grow a few select items, which are over priced in the store. So they can be grown naturally. I think quality food is always going to be a concern, but it can support a few people to run the operation.

I don't want any debt, beyond operational debt for the business, and basic utilities expense for the home. I really don't like at all to have to think about monthly expense which are basic and support necessities, I think that is an UN-neccessary use of time, these bills should be paid by auto debit. because , lights, gas, water, communication expense, are things which come as a standard in the world we live. they should be paid out of their own account automatically. have the account set up, to send a notice if the debt exceeds a measured amount. to protect against any gouging by the utility companies.

I want to be able to use any and all income to do and create things I want to do and create. Those kind of investment appeal to me.

When it comes to women, I like women who are not interesting in wasting money on over priced purses and over priced shoes. It is important that the woman is neat, slim and maintains herself as such. and definitely a woman with a happy disposition and a positive personality.

I've certainly had some errors with things over the past years, but as with all things, it will pass, but I don't care to make the same type of mistakes again.

I know the importance of having my own thing, I've lost far too much depending on jobs that belong to other people. I want an entertainment business, which has the component to manage talent and stage events. I have all the framework together, it cost me dearly to put it together, and a bit of a set back, but I certainly have not given up on it. but I know now, don't try and be as helpful when selecting people to work with, choose people who bring something to the table in skills and ability to perform. and if I take on any partners they must make an investment or they can be no more than an employee of the business.
But, most of all.. Keep envious people away from me and keep them away from what ever venture that I engage.

The good thing about the foreign locations, some of the younger women are more stable than some of the younger women in the states. this does not mean all the younger women there are of stable minds to make relations. But I think the % is that more options exist in some foreign locations than in the states.

I don't understand wealthy peoples logic.. of why they won't pay cash for their homes and be done with it. securing home is a primary concern, and if one can do so, it does not make sense to pay monthly, when one has an abundance of cash or a very high income. I think the key is, don't go out and buy an over priced house in an over-priced market. Too big of a house is a drain that serves no benefit. I don't need the house to impress others, I only need it to be functional for my needs and the things I like.

It's never good to get in to a "keep up with the Jones", its a recipe for disaster

I kept my last Benz for more than 8 yrs , I kept one Porsche for more than 8 yrs, my current car I've had since 2006, and it was used when I bought it. It's a 1999.. right now it needs a full service tune up, but there is no need to get an newer model,... at this particular time. but when I do it will be again a per-owned unit, I have thought about the Mini Cooper, but not quite sure. I'll probably get rid of the bikes, because I've not used them in more than a year. Its an UN-necessary drain on already under paid income.

I can no longer give my skills away for less than they are worth. I've transformed so many aspect of the Department I work in certain ways, I've coordinated and monitored the largest of the stimulus program funds in our department, and done so effectively and successfully exceeding all its goals.

but, now its time for people to pay me a functional wage for the work I do.

I don't really waste money, but it certainly is necessary to earn enough to cover my living and invest to build ... therefore they must pay me more.
