A demonstration against building a nuclear raw-material factory

There is a demonstration in my city today. The local government made a contract with CNNC (China National Nuclear Corporation), plan to build a nuclear raw-material factory in Heshan(鹤山) area, which is with a straight-line distance less than 30 km to my city (Jiangmen江门), 60-100 km to other important cities of Guangdong including Zhongshan(中山), Fushan(佛山), Zhuhai(珠海) even Guangzhou(广州).

The Pearl River Delta(珠江三角洲) is one of the most developed area in China with dense population. Can't understand why a nuclear raw-material factory has to be built here?

Experts said it will be safe enough and no need to worry about the radiation. But, think about Chernobyl and Fukushima, who can guarantee it can be safe forever?

There are only 10 days (7/4-7/13) that leave to the public to express their opinions, which seems more like pharisaism for such a big project with such a short period of time. Comments on the internet are one-sided opposite. If it still builds it would completely defile public opinions.

It just happens in where I live in. So sad.

Nuclear power plants should not be built near the planet earth. I was going to say, not near poplulated areas, but revised my thought. The San Onofre nuclear power plant in California was closed down after years of protests. Lots of proof that there is a higher incidence of cancers nearer that power plant. Another is the large nuclear power plant at Indian Point New York. Not shut down yet, but should be. Too dangerous.
It is easy to say that nuclear power plants are safe. They are not. Maybe if built perfect, they are safe for 40 to 50 years. But things wear out. Natural disasters can and do happen. The waste lasts tens of thousands of years. Never in 1000 generations will the Fukushima or Chernoble sites and surroundings be safe.
Lets use Germany as a model. Closing down nuclear plants, and putting up solar panels and wind turbines. For 2012, 25% of their energy was from alternative renewable sources. Target of 35% by 2020. The only thing stopping this in other countries is oil companies giving money to politicians.

I would be very uncomfortable with any building of any type of nuclear facility close to where I live.
In the scenario you mention, it is no way they can evacuate so many people in the short time span that would be needed, during any emergency due to system breach.

too often when it comes to such thing, money speaks louder than people, and elected or appointed officials, may not know when to revert from sticking their hands out accepting influence money. As it is logical, once the officials are paid off, they can afford to move to a location where this facility is not located.
