Are you prepared? Yesterday i saw this amusing program about people who are preparing themselves for doomsday. They make an underground shelter and have food and water stored for at least half a year. They believe that mankind will be destroyed after a nuclear war so that is why. They spend a lot of money to make that shelter and their food they have is also worth a lot. The food is most of the time freeze dried and canned vegetables and meat. When they have vacation they actually practice with their family how to survive a nuclear war. Make clear water en cook upon an open fire. They also have an whole arsenal of weapons to defend themselves for people who wanna rob their food when doomsday had past. Its scary in a way..... Right after that program i saw "extreme coupon" Where people (only women) save their coupons, actually go on a door to door mission in their neighborhood to collect as much coupons as possible. And when the time is right they go to the market, buy for $1.500 on food and non food supply but when they have to pay they pay only a few bucks due to their coupons. Most of the participants of this program have a food stock for at least a half a year as well but they do this for a different reason as the group i mentioned above. They do this to save money and for the kick and sport to save as much as possible. Anyway it started me to think, i know those 2 examples are extreme, but in a way they are right. Arguably in terms on why they are doing this (although extreme coupon is a very good way to save money). Arguably is also how much food and water supply you need. Its good to have some food and water stored for times, well i don't know what times, but to have a reserve. That you are self maintained or whatever? That you are mature enough to see cause and reaction? Jen's stock of food, good for 2 weeks or so I believe that they mainly do this for themselves that they feel good and confident that they are prepared for the worst. I will increase my food stock because i like a good meal |

I keep a few things for challenged times.. I think I will get a few Igloo coolers, and store some food in them, they can withstand flooding water and they can withstand being banged around. I'd love to have a ungrounded shelter, for protection from tornado's, hurricanes, and other things.. I don't know about a Nuclear incident, because that is kind of hard to fathom. In such a situation, there may not be much of anything left and surely it will requires a great deal if one survives it. Food may be one item but there will be countless other factors, one may not even imagine how to guard against.

Your right Touch and Goa, how and how long can one family stay awake to protect their food. There is something cruel about it, suppose one survive the nuclear impact, the blast and the fall out, 99,9% of mankind is death, to be shot after it because someone wants to protect their hamburger? In London they are installing anti rocket installation due to the 2012 Olympics just to be sure i guess, it makes you wonder in what kind of world we are living. One should be prepared when you are living in an area where natural disasters can strike as you mentioned Katrina. But dried food is worthless when you cant mix it with water and heat it. Another thing is do you have the time to go to your shelter? When nature strike it is nearly always unexpected.

Hi Jen, whatever, people are people. I could never understand people who collect post stamps. With your current foodstock i could survive 1 month. I also like a good meal but food to survive and fine dining is not something to compare. When your hungry you will eat everything.

And if you allow me to say someting on a personal note, you look great

Hi Wo, your absolutely right there is no sense in starting a nuclear war to any country. Actually the program about people who prepare and extreme coupons that is in the US. What struck me the most is that people who prepare, they are not weard or suffer an psychological disease, they are normal good people who have a job, accountants, bank employees etc. etc I think they are feeling comfortable just by store their food and water for doomsday.

Um, if we can all step back from the edge of armageddon a moment, there may be perfectly good reasons to stockpile. Reasons that don't involve the end of life as we know it. I've lived far from a major city for some time now. Have a localized event and the pump does not run for.... a few days. Then it's a happy thought to see those 5 gallon jugs sitting in the cool basement. Have a road wash out and laugh it off because the food you normally buy is stacked up next to the water, and will last for weeks. Grow a garden. Enjoy the fresh veggies. The garden will also give it's bounty when there is nothing else. And preserving what you have is just prudent. Besides, you grew it you canned it so there are no unpronounceable additives on the label. All those other things? Are just easier and cheaper to stock up on when on sale. And I know no-one who goes banging on doors in search of coupons lmao at that. Out here if you run out? The "quick trip to the store" takes an hour. Naturally in a tiny apartment, it's not practical to do the Costco thing. But having a first aid kit, some candles and a battery radio (yes some batteries make the list) etc keeps ya from being one of those panicked hungry faces on the news when that quake or flood happens. And they do happen. Been there, done that, and happy to be o.k. through them. Be nice to yourself. Learn First Aid, CPR/ CCC and be there for those around you any day. So it's not just disasters on a grand scale. And not just canned goods guns and whack jobs. It's about being a good neighbor instead of a victim.

That is a healthy attitude Nottaplaya, that you refuse to live in fear. As i mentioned in my reply to Wo, the people who do prepare for the worst are just normal respectable people with a family and normal daily job, in the program i couldn't see that they live in fear but they just like to be prepared.

Your right Dave and nice to see you 2. I just wonder that my stock is worthless without water and gas to cook and boil the food. I have much pasta and noodles, can you eat them dry? could you try it to eat it dry and report to me if it is eatable? Mix 200 gr dry pasta with 2 spiders, rinse, season with mud, ad 2 teaspoon salt and 1 teaspoon pepper. Bon appetite

keeping some can's of 'canned heat" might not be a bad idea.. it's the canisters, used at events under the food serving pans, to keep the food warm

I didn't read every post so sorry if this is a repeat. You need to keep refreshing things about once a year. It can get expensive to endure this but it is a good idea just in the event of a natural disaster like power outages.
