Tell me your most humbling experience

I'll share mine and I hope after you read it you will share yours.

In May of 1986 I was stationed aboard the USS South Carolina transiting across the Atlantic Ocean (AKA the Big Pond) from the USA to Europe. My 8PM to Midnight watch ended and had my share of midnight rations (mid rats), but I wasn't sleepy so I decided to go up on the steel beach (AKA the helicopter pad on the back of the ship) and chill out.

Stepping outside from the lighted interior I hit that absolute blackness of the night so I stepped through the hatch and sidestepped along the bulkhead until my eyes adjusted.

After about 10 minutes my eyes adjusted enough to see my surroundings because I wouldn't want to fall overboard on such a beautiful and warm night. I walked aft to the fantail (AKA the stern) and after another 10 minutes or so I could begin to see more and more of what was the most amazing sight of my life to that point.

You have to picture the setting. We are more than 500 miles from any land so there is ZERO light pollution. The moon had set several hours before and there wasn't a single cloud in the sky. On a moonless cloudless night in the middle of nowhere I began to see stars that I never know existed. I laid down on the hard steel deck and just looked more and more deeply into our universe. After an unknown amount of time my eyes beheld, planets, galaxies, nebula and the sheer vastness of our universe from horizon to horizon.

It was in this very instant that I felt the most humbled. I felt like a speck of nothing among the vastness and beauty that is our known universe. It was at that same moment I felt the most alive because I was ALIVE and able to experience the absolute significance of my insignificance compared the all that my eyes and mind conceived.

That is pretty awesome. That would be a sight to behold. I am waiting for my chance to see the northern lights again. I think that will be a great day.

One of mine was just recently, I was out playing with a new camera. Just trying out the features and experimenting with it. I took a bunch of close up shots of flowers and the changing leaves. Looking through the photos and I did manage to a few really good shots I saw the beauty of life focused in a small piece of the larger scene.

We are all just a small piece of the larger world around us. We are so busy with life and we should sit back and appreciate the smaller parts of the world around us.

I hear you. There is nothing like the true beauty of nature if we just slow down enough to look

When I was in Service, we were out in the Desert Mountains one night, and the stars and all seem so close and it was so many and they were so clear it was purely Amazing.. But even too, Flying Across the Ocean is amazing when ones thinks about the vast expanse of water and flying for 12 hrs at 500+mph and still there is nothing below but water. That's amazing and that is a "LOT" of water.

We don't really know how big the world is, and yet how small it is in the massive expanse of the Space around and above us.

Probably one thing I'd not do, is go in a submarine to the depths they go, but I'm sure that has to be something Amazing as well.

it is within appreciating the things a little boy might take for granted.

I guess you might be right if I could remember my birth, but since I can't it would seem to me that the most memorable humbling moment is as described above.

For me I hope to always keep the wonder of the universe as seen through the eyes of a child and not become cynical or jaded by the challenges of life.

Please do not misunderstand my thoughts. I am blessed for my life to have the mother I had. She kept me alive many times when I was very young and could not take care of myself. I am humbled by the love she gave to me as I feel from my whole family, but the love of a mother is special. The bonds at birth never go away and even after her death I know she has great love for me.

You say it was a pity you didn't have a boy, but a beautiful girl. She will be a greater blessing to you because she will be your friend where a boy will often go off to make his own life and leave family behind.

You are right though if men could have babies the world would be a different place from many perspectives.

Think about it:
They might be a little more careful about having sex,
They might try to screw themselves
They might not want to start wars as often
They might be able to withstand little more pain
They might be really good nest builders

I have to tell u though I know what it is like to give birth to a bowling ball. I passed a grain of sand sized kidney stone once and was told by nurse this is what it feels like for woman to give birth. Yikes, glad I am man.. HAHAHAHAHAHA

the birth of a boy or girl is what it is, the child is helpless... and dependent, not the boy or the girl is more or less dependent, they are both the same ... dependent on the parent.

pinkcrystal, thank you for your kind words.

I have been told by many people that I am as my ID here implies. I have found it better to be a good man and be of service to others then to be a guy (there is a significant difference between a man and a guy) that is mostly self focused.

In 2007, Tian Du Feng , the steepest peak of Huang shan ( In An hui province, China)

Standing in the peak, suddenly, the rising steaming fog covered the whole peak of Tiandu, and me ! i was flying in the sky like a bird , but can not find the direction.
Cannot help but marvel at the magic wonders of nature which made me feel by comparison very, very small indeed.
The way you describe the scene I can feel what you felt and the awe of the moment.

I am not sure I understand the apparent contradiction in your statement of time creeping on but having done nothing while before that you experienced great insight.

Care to explain?

I would have to say this is not only a quandary for young Chinese people. It is becoming a universal question for people of almost any age.

There are reports across many economic sectors that the challenges of the worldwide economic downturn has had an impact on peoples' lives from the old world, new world and third world economies.

Your advice to follow your dream is the best and most important thought to move people beyond their current circumstances, but it takes courage and faith to follow your passion.

If a person follows their dream then as time creeps on then something grand and wonderful will be done.
