It may well depend on many other factors, (likely we are talking about "white men" with some level of resources, are we not? )

What is his situation? area of income earning, and many other such thing that happen to exist in situations.

Money seems to have a means to expedite thing, ( that's not to say only white men have money), but whom ever the man is, it depends on the work they both put in and the ability to maintain the standards that may be part of the unspoken and maybe even the spoken considerations.

"Can she not leave US once the process starts? How long should she wait and how long does it take usually to get it?

Does this question imply that she is trying to get citizenship, with later plans to go back to her country once she has secured citizenship? Unfortunatly, many try that method, but in some cases it may lead to citizenship being revoked, depending on the actions the man takes to prove she was on a "citizenship hunt mission".
Some even "pay men" to marry them for the sake of citizenship, "that is a criminal offense" and could carry more penalty that she is willing to live up to face.

Honorable intentions and honest follow through is the best scenario for anyone who seeks to gain citizenship by the act of marriage.

Maybe she should arrange a meeting with Immigration, both hers and the US and get the correct guidelines as to what is legally within the process and how and what she can and cannot do. "Getting info from the source is always better than 'hearsay" and "second hand info".

I got my PR (Permanent Resident, the so called Green Card), when I landed in USA the day I arrived in 1980 through the Custom. I got my US citizenship 5 yrs later in 1985. When I married my ex-husband in Dec 1986, I helped him to get his PR.

First your friend needs to get the original "marriage certificate" and apply PR through INS (Immigration and Naturalization Services), wait for long time to be called. Her husband needs to company her to the "interview" with INS.

It has been too long time ago, I don't know if the procedure has been changed or not. Maybe, she can apply online as we have internet system. She needs to get her original marriage certificate and ask an Immigration Attorney or a legal advisor for detail. Google it.

Tell her to apply Social Security Numbers, it is as important as PR (Green Card). According many of Chinese new immigrant that once obtained PR, that person needs to stay in USA at least six months every year. If she got PR card and stays in other country for more than six months, her PR card will be seized by U.S. Custom at airport (the stamps on passport will show how long).

Be very honest to INS and U.S. Custom and Social Security Service. U.S. government agents assumed what you said is true for the first time, but if they found out you lied, cheated, you will be in trouble.

Foreigners married to U.S. citizens, need to apply a ID card (or driver's license). Your friend needs to show INS that she lives with her American husband (same address on every document), bank account jointed, ... more joint accounts the better, house, cars, insurance, ..... bring wedding photos will help.

Answer every question honestly, stays in USA more than six months in a year. With PR card, driver's license (ID), and Social Security numbers, she can start to look for a job and stays in USA.

Kayra:

Your friend has 2 kids in Indonesia and she needs to visit her kids after married to American citizen. Why can't she take her 2 kids (from previous marriage) to USA to live with her newlywed husband??

Besides the official documents, I hope your friend need to prepare herself to U.S. society along with her new husband personality and character. It will be a challenge for her. She needs to learn English that including those idioms, slang, U.S. political systems, economy, accounting, current events .... There are thousand of things are different from the environment she used to live. That is the so called "assimilation". Some Americans may said "ENGLISH ONLY" or "I DON'T KNOW WHAT ARE YOU SAYING" right on your face.

Best wishes on her new marriage, new life in USA.

Honesty is the best policy.

Hi Kayra,

Congratulation to your friend!!! Did you friend came to US with B2/tourist visa ?

If she came with B2 non immigrant visa/ tourist visa and met someone in US and got married , what she need to do is ....adjustment of status ( AOS)

If she came to US with a tourist visa , with a intent of immigration and marriage , she might be screw during the process. She will need to return to her home abroad , her USC husband will have to file for a spouse visa to avoid denial, deportation or even being banned from re-entry to USA.

Is all depend on how your friend answer to CBP when she entering to USA
