I have had good luck so far in meeting people that I have met on line. I understand what woaini says, but one must keep an open mind, yet also be careful. I think if you are honest with yourself as well as the person you are communicating with, your chances are much better. I think a lot of the relationships that go bad could go just as bad if they were all in person meetings. Many people that have meet in person & known each other for a long time still end in divorce, no matter where, or how they first met. I have met five people in person that I met on line, and so far our meetings have all been good. The advise Jo gave you is also very good, it is always good to have a plan B if you can.
