Yes, it's Chinese stuff for communication and more. I don't have friends and relatives in China so I don't use Wechat at all. Just download it like skype and Whatsapp I think. .

It is the all everything social media app. Very easy to send pics, videos, have a chat, voice messages, video chat....I also use it to buy movie tickets, train & plane tickets, book a hotel, pay for virtually everything--phone, utilities, rent, restaurants, any shop (including street vendors!). Send and receive money to/from anyone......we also use it to organize different group activities. I use it to stay in touch with friends in the U.S. too. In fact, you Aliceyumi are the only person I communicate with using email. Oh! And don't forget the built-in translator!

From my experience, most Chinese are very excited to get the chance to correspond with 老外 (foreigners). For some it is genuine interest in other cultures. For others it might only be so they can brag to their friends that they have a foreigner friend. We chat has a couple of things built in to help people make new friends by random connection. One of my better Wechat, chat buddies is a woman who accidentally mis-typed a client's phone number into the Wechat locator and got me instead. We have chatted every day since even though she doesn't know any English at all. I have never used any other social media app. So I can't compare.
