ROOT

Only when a person lives in a culture that he is rooted in, can he be truly dynamic and confident. That's my conclusion.

Some of my classmates live and work in the United States. They all have master or doctor degrees and have good jobs. They try hard to be outgoing, confident, and seem to have high moral standards. They travel, exercise, socialize, and even try adventurous activities. They do everything that American society admires. However, I find that they do not show the same depth of thinking as people here in China. Also they lose critical eyes in catering to another culture.

My ex-boyfriend was a Chinese working in Silicon Valley. I met him when he was in China preparing to start his own small company. He was undoubtedly a man of high IQ, with two master degrees, but in my eyes he was a tragic man. Although he always bursted to me the merits of the US, such as civilized citizens, clean air and food, and quality education, he remained in China and was reluctant to return to the United States, even though his small business seemed to have no future. The reason is simple: in China, he is regarded as a successful American citizen. People admire him and women approach him voluntarily. In America, he is just an ordinary introverted divorced Asian man.

The same happens to foreigners in China. Despite their popularity in China because of their skin color and race, I can't feel a sense of complacency in them. My first job was in Beijing, when there was a German in the company named Peter. Peter was not qualified for his position according to his educational background or work experience, the boss recruited him because he thought he could take Peter when meeting the . But because of this, Peter was scared of losing his job (he was said to be a driver in Germany and later taught himself something in college). So Peter always talked with colleagues carefully. But the more carefully he spoke , the more my colleagues looked down on him, also because of Peter's unserious style of life (playing with Chinese women) .

So, although we all have a lot of complaints about our own environment and culture, we do not realize that they are our roots, if we are big trees. If we were transplanted elsewhere, we might be able to survive, but we certainly wouldn't be as fit as we used to be.
