Planning another China trip Brrr winter in China I am going to join a Chinese Camp, just ten days intense study, from MandarinX, Estella of Taipei University. I have studied Chinese for 4 years online with their EDX course, now she is offering this course in Shanghai so I will seize the opportunity, to study amongst much much younger students. Early in the new year I'll go to meet friends in north China, then proceed on to Harbin. What am I going to do about the winter, and winter clothes? In New Zealand 50 ago, leather gloves, overcoat, how will I cope now? Anyone want to join me?. ![]() ![]() |

Thermal under layers are the essential then hat and scarf on top of your leather gloves and overcoat. Enjoy your study and trip to north China. .

I bought pure wool hat, groves, socks, undershirts, under pants, and a magenta color jacket in New Zealand in Feb 2015. As you know, Feb is summer in NZ, so they were on sale. They advised me that I should only use "cold water" hand wash those wool products. I wanted to give to my daughter when she was in very cold Detroit, Michigan state, but my daughter refused to accept them. BTW, I have a real mink coat bought in Los Angles when it was on sale. I only wore twice, one to Europe (England, France, Holland and Begum), the other time was to Canada. It never snow in Southern California. I have booked a trip to Italy since May this year. They sent me the itinerary in email and the team leader (an Italian woman) contacted me lately. I am leaving in 2 days that is Monday morning, Oct 15th. Honesty is the best policy.

@Classylady Basically I want to buy throw-away clothes - I'm never going to need them in Australia. Yes thermal underwear, a scarf, none of my students seem to wear gloves in BJ or Shenyang or... But Harbin? That remains to be seen /SIZE]

@Classy thank you, thank you!

Tickets booked - but man are they expensive at this time of year - more than double usual budget price. I found one cheap approach Arrive and depart via Hainan Airlines, arrive Haikou. Suits me, I haven't been there before, and it will give me a gentler introduction to China's winter, allowing me to don winter clothes more gradually. As winter deepens I venture deeper into the frozen North. Actually it's not that far north, just marginally more so than Montreal and marginally less than Quebec city

Haikou was warm and comfortable - but difficult to get a China SIM card - without the 身份证 shenfenzheng or identity card. It took a visit to head office of China Mobile, and I am not sure what contract I bought! I cannot make telephone calls, but I can receive SMS and use the Weixin Qianbao - so convenient! - and can get online.

You get what you pay for! $17 kezhan no heating, no TV (that's ok) lukewarm shower![]()

We have exchanged QQ or Wechat ID's in the past, and did converse a few years ago, but the communication dried up, apparently. 老鬼
