"Films" about the horror of what people do to people

A powerful Chinese film ( I'd like to see it)

By Silvia Aloisi – Mon Sep 6, 9:19 am ET

VENICE – A powerful Chinese film on the plight of political prisoners condemned to forced labor camps in the late 1950s wooed critics in Venice on Monday, with some tipping it as a strong contender for the festival's top prize.

"The Ditch" tells the little-known story of some 3,000 people deported for "re-education" to labor camps on the edge of the Gobi desert, in western China, and struggling to survive extreme climate and acute food shortages.

Billed as right-wing enemies by the government for even mildly criticizing the Communist party or simply because of their background, many died of starvation, disease and exhaustion in the ditches that served as dormitories.

Director Wang Bing spent three years tracking down survivors and wardens of the Jiabiangou and Mingshui Camps for the film, a surprise entry in the main competition line-up that was only revealed on Monday.

"For 10, maybe 20 years, independent Chinese cinema has focused above all else on the social problems of the poorest working classes in contemporary China," Bing says in the production notes.

"The Ditch is perhaps the first film to deal directly with contemporary China's political past, talking as it does about the 'Rightists' and what they endured in the re-education camps. It's still a taboo subject."

The film, warmly applauded at a press screening, is unlikely to be released in its home country, where authorities remain sensitive about how such topics are portrayed.

Still, Bing said he hoped the film would be an opportunity for younger Chinese like him -- he was born in 1967 -- to learn about their country's past.

"I wanted to talk about our history, past events that can be criticized because of the way in which the Chinese suffered, and show them so that people can reflect on them," he told reporters, speaking through a translator.

DOCUMENTARY STYLE

Shot like a documentary, The Ditch focuses on the last three months of life in an annexe camp where the 1,500 prisoners who had survived until then were moved in 1960, as drought ravaged the whole of China.

Initially forced to plough 4,000 hectares of barren land in the middle of nowhere, they are later left to waste in underground dormitories as food runs out and many cannot stand on their feet.

Barely 500 people came out of that experience alive when authorities finally decided to send the prisoners back home.

"Everything in the film really happened at the camp. Nothing has been made up or added," says Bing, who used many non-professional actors for his first feature film after a string of documentaries.

The Ditch is one of 24 titles vying for the Venice film festival's top Golden Lion prize which will be awarded on Saturday.

Also in competition and premiering on Monday is "Essential Killing," a different struggle for survival with Vincent Gallo as a suspected Taliban fighter on the run from U.S. forces in Afghanistan and later in Europe.

With very sparse dialogue, and not a single word uttered by its lead character, the film by Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski follows Gallo's escape through a snow-blanketed forest, and also stars Emmanuelle Seigner as the mute woman who briefly helps him.

Always the history has many details, its good when the brave of heart expand themselves, to explore it, many people often times have no ideas of what tragedies impact the lives of many, in the history of nations, as unfortunate as it is, many have not much care to investigate such things. But wonder why in the reality of today, many thing exist as they do.

Seemingly there is much present day society is unaware of, in the degree and extent of what there is within the roots, of what stands as the outgrowth of what is today.

We learn better how to build greater fortitude against the repeats of such tragedies, by learning of the mentalities that created and the society that tolerate the existence of such things. the history which made today, has been one of many things.

through investigative efforts and painstaking research, those mindset are reviewed, What they present, makes ways for much to be learned, then learning can encompass how not to be lead and mis-led, and how not to stand with a blind eye, or the mind of a follower, to allow such things to escalate in societies, which result to damage many peoples lives.

Troubled history, is a reality of many places, sadly there was much of society that stood with a blind eye, during all these historical tragedies. Example, when the Jews were burned, there were many with a blind eyes, as was too, when slavery was the rage, and many with blind eyes, deny the horror in the content and extent of what was truly engaged of such devastating activities by human beings against human beings. Much of today's society, see it as an anomaly, or something unreal, or not fathomable to the extent of tragic realism it truly was. Even many today, are unaware of the massive massacre in China, and in Cambodia, as well as Rwanda and the problems that led to the divisive nation of India, Africa and many other places.

Unfortunate as it is necessary, these films serve a good means to see what is history and the actions of people, as well as what is within the history of those truth.
visual media seem to be capable to show, what many will not willingly discuss, it serves to help society, not to continue to repeat over and over the tragedies of the past.

Roots did a great story to depict the tragedies and horrors of slavery, which many had never thought of, Schindler's List was a very good film that depicted horror tragedy of the Holocaust, and the documentary "Eyes of the Holocaust", there were films about "The Killing Fields, that shows tragedy and death of Cambodian slaughter and the film. Hotel Rwanda, was a good film about the slaughter and tragedy so many suffered. In The Time of Butterflies, was a good film about Dominican Republic, and countless films about the war in Vietnam. so many films about so much tragedy over the ages, is a very good usage of cinema. unfortunately, these films only can tough on segments and much may be missed, for the sake of cinema standards, but in the reality of full exposure, it may well be even more impacting if more of the details were shown, about the taboo areas, that films to some degree avoid to present, for a variety of reasons..

These film makers, do good work to show, the sad actions of people against people in the history of society.

We live today in a society that is focused on "good time activity", and we often like to assume the past has never existed, but what is within the history has so much inference on what exist in the present day realism.

Report: Money can buy you happiness, to a point

By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID

WASHINGTON – They say Money can't buy happiness. They're wrong.

At least up to a point.

People's emotional well-being - happiness - increases along with their income up to about $75,000, researchers report in Tuesday's edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

For folks making less than that, said Angus Deaton, an economist at the Center for Health and Wellbeing at Princeton University, "Stuff is so in your face it's hard to be happy. It interferes with your enjoyment."

Deaton and Daniel Kahneman reviewed surveys of 450,000 Americans conducted in 2008 and 2009 for the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index that included questions on people's day-to-day happiness and their overall life satisfaction.

Happiness got better as income rose but the effect leveled out at $75,000, Deaton said. On the other hand, their overall sense of success or well-being continued to rise as their earnings grew beyond that point.

"Giving people more income beyond 75K is not going to do much for their daily mood ... but it is going to make them feel they have a better life," Deaton said in an interview.

Not surprisingly, someone who moves from a $100,000-a-year job to one paying $200,000 realizes an improved sense of success. That doesn't necessarily mean they are happier day to day, Deaton said.

The results were similar for other measures, Deaton said. For example, people were really happier on weekends, but their deeper sense of well-being didn't change.

Kahneman, a Nobel Prize winning psychologist, and Deaton undertook the study to learn more about economic growth and policy.

Some have questioned the value of growth to individuals, and Deaton said they were far from definitively resolving that question.

But he added, "Working on this paper has brought me a lot of emotional well-being. As an economist I tend to think Money is good for you, and am pleased to find some evidence for that."

Overall, the researchers said, "as in other studies of well-being, we found that most people were quite happy and satisfied with their lives."

Comparing their life-satisfaction results with those of other countries, the researchers said the United States ranked ninth after the Scandinavian countries, Canada, the Netherlands, Switzerland and New Zealand.

The research was supported by the Gallup Organization and the National Institute on Aging.

After a certain point, Money and happiness may well become mute, as to Money buying happiness..

There's only so many hours in a day, and some many things, one has time to deal with, so no matter how much you buy, you may find you have less time to deal with it.
one could have a 10,000 sq ft closet, but they can only wear so many clothes at a given time, or 20-100 cars, but can only drive one at a time.

The clothes will get old, the cars, require maintenance expense, and they depreciate in value over time, it may take them 30 years to rise in value if they are kept in good conditions.

Traveling, can take one many places but, one can only be in one place at a time.

There are many good works one can create with Money, it appears when one has their Money working, and it produces things that are socially beneficial, it may inspire them in ways, more than just having wealth, and doing nothing with it. some simply like to party, and some may like to do many things.

Beyond all that Money can do, it still becomes a matter of one actually liking themselves, and having positive social interactions.

There has been many very wealthy people to die miserable, alone, and some even have gone mad, and some have a rich family life, and seem to grow into their older years, surrounded by things that have more value than all the Money they amassed.

There have been starlets, sports players and many professionals in a wide variety of fields,, who have lost everything behind the opulence of image and status, in recent years, we have seen some who had their natural god given beauty, to have monstrosities of faces, from a massive amount of plastic surgery, some have destroyed the natural breast, with botched implants, and found maybe less happiness than they had before they ventured so far.

Some people claim they were more happy when they had less and worked hard than when they had more than they need, and excesses far beyond what they could actually utilize.

Recently we have seen a variety of billionaires, give their Money to endeavors of various sorts, to spend it for the benefit of others. One even stipulated that the Money could not be used for anything that earns more Money, only for what benefits the service that provide for people.

Some people chase to marry wealth, and then complain about not having the mate at home, and some complain about having the mate at home and having less Money, seems in the expanse of the world, the ideals about Money, life, love and happiness, has many perspectives.

We've seen Lotto winners, find more disaster than happiness, and some find means to improve their lives and find balance in doing so, some become penniless in a short span of time.

We see some who spend their youth and beauty, chasing Money, and find age with many health problems are a face and body covered by wrinkles, and void of having know and shared loving.

Some have found Money brought plots to end their life, and mates have killed each other or, one or the other has had the other killed or some tragic things. some have ran their mates mad, to claim the wealth, and some have committed their own parents to institutions, to take their Money. some even have killed their own parents for the sake of Money.

Bodies and claims of love has been sold for Money since the beginning existence of Money. Kings have raided other kingdoms for Money, and wars have been fought in every place for the grasp of Money, people enslave other for Money. Human lives are snuffed out, to sell body parts for Money. Graves have been robbed for Money, along with the fact, any thing one can imagine to think, someone has done it for Money..

Very high amounts of money people pay for homes, Imagine what other things could be bought with this volume of money,

many people build amazing things, some people have massive homes, which could function to support multiple families, many , and still have enough wealth for all to do many many things. It's probably not likely that anyone who has homes that cost this much, has any family members, who are wanting for anything.

it simply goes to show, there is vast volumes of money in society, it may be held by a few, but nevertheless, very huge volumes of money...

I guess the questions is, "what makes for home" ? it appears that it is many things to many people....

What makes for a home for you??

Very Expensive homes.

for me, with homes this size, I'd want to have multiples wives, who each have their own section of the house, and enough , to run around and enjoy the landscape of it all..

I don't see where one or two people, really would need that much house, but it is excellent, for a situation of "multiple wives', then everyone has their own space, and it would be a shame, not to have many many , to enjoy the land and surrounding attributes.

I'm sure, that could be made into a harmonious situation, or even maybe not build one big house, but many smaller houses, on the land, and give each woman her own house, on the land. and make one big multi family situation. that's enough money to build each woman a million dollar home, and give each woman a few million, to manage her situations, and open a business, and then everyone contributes to what it takes to maintain all of it. and still have millions left for reserve capital.

Subject: $20 Bill....Very Interesting really creepy

History Mystery

Have a history teacher explain this----- if they can.

Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846.
John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946.

Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860.
John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960.

Both were particularly concerned with civil rights.
Both wives lost their husands while living in the White House.

Both Presidents were shot on a Friday.
Both Presidents were shot in the head

Now it gets really weird.

Lincoln 's secretary was named Kennedy.
Kennedy's Secretary was named Lincoln .

Both were assassinated by Southerners.
Both were succeeded by Southerners named Johnson.

Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln, was born in 1808.
Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 1908.

John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Lincoln, was born in 1839. Lee Harvey Oswald, who assassinated Kennedy, was born in 1939.

Both assassins were known by their three names.
Both names are composed of fifteen letters.

Now hang on to your seat.

Lincoln was shot at the theater named 'Ford'.
Kennedy was shot in a car called ' Lincoln ' made by 'Ford'.

Lincoln was shot in a theater and his assassin ran and hid in a warehouse.
Kennedy was shot from a warehouse and his assassin ran and hid in a theater.

Booth and Oswald were assassinated before their trials.

WHO FIGURED THIS OUT?

1) Fold a NEW $20 bill in half...

2) Fold again, taking care to fold it exactly as below

3) Fold the other end, exactly as before

4) Now, simply turn it over...

What a coincidence! A simple geometric fold creates a catastrophic premonition printed on all $20 bills!!!

COINCIDENCE?

YOU DECIDE

As if that wasn't enough...
Here is what you've seen...

Firstly The Pentagon on fire...

Then The Twin Towers.

...And now .. look at this!

TRIPLE COINCIDENCE ON A SIMPLE $20 BILL
Disaster (Pentagon)
Disaster ( Twin Towers )
Disaster (Osama)???

It gets even better 9 + 11 = $20!

Creepy huh?

Farms being prosecuted for importing Thai workers

By MARK NIESSE
HONOLULU — Two prominent, popular brothers who operate the second-largest vegetable farm in Hawaii will be sentenced in federal court this week on human trafficking charges — they pleaded guilty — but two former state governors, community groups, fellow farmers and other supporters are trying to keep them out of prison.

The brothers were convicted of shipping 44 laborers from Thailand and forcing them to work on their farm, part of a pipeline to the United States that allegedly cornered foreign field hands into low-paying jobs with few rights.

Aloun Farms may be too important to fail in an island state that once relied on pineapples and sugar cane but grows less than 15 percent of the food it consumes, according to supporters of defendants Alec and Mike Sou.

"The incarceration of Alec and Mike Sou would threaten our food security and could endanger our future sustainability on Oahu," wrote Kioni Dudley, president of the community group Friends of Makakilo, in a letter asking U.S. District Judge Susan Oki Mollway for leniency. "Find some method of punishment which allows them to stay in their positions at Aloun Farms."

The Sou brothers are asking for a light sentence with little or no jail time based in part on the idea that their farm is too valuable to the islands' food supply to let it go untended. The plea deal they agreed to in January called for up to five years imprisonment.

Prosecutors accuse them of manipulating the Thai workers by promising at least a year's employment at pay of $9.42 an hour, but instead delivering only a few months of work for little pay.

If the workers complained, Mike Sou threatened to send them home without any way to repay recruitment fees exceeding $20,000 that they borrowed from Thai money lenders to pay for their jobs, federal authorities claim.

The workers were trapped on the farm, forced to choose between long hours with low wages and an unpromising future in Thailand, said former farm worker Somporn Khanja, who arrived at the farm in 2004.

"I'd been lied to, but I couldn't do anything about it," the 45-year-old Khanja said through his wife, acting as an interpreter. "I hope justice is being done. I believe in American law. It takes so long, but it's good. In America, we have to wait."

In about 120 letters to the judge supporting the Sou brothers, community members praise their importance to Hawaii's agriculture industry, their ability to provide up to 200 jobs at a time and their character.

Former Democratic Gov. Ben Cayetano called the Sou family's immigration from Laos and creation of a farm a "remarkable success story." Former Democratic Gov. John Waihee commended the Sous' skill in transforming sugar fields into diversified farming.

Others who offered support to the brothers include the former head of the state Land Board, the state Department of Agriculture, the Hawaii Foodbank, competing farms, two banks who are owed money from the farms and former Aloun employees.

The Kapolei-based company grows a variety of foods including cantaloupe, lettuce, zucchini, apples, bananas, parsley, onions, watermelon, beans, eggplant, cabbage and pumpkin. Alec Sou is the farm's president and general manager, and Mike Sou is its vice president and operations manager.

Human trafficking opponents say they deserve more than a slap on the wrist for enticing foreign workers with pledges of steady work and then revoking that offer after the laborers were already indebted and flown to the United States.

Federal authorities and some of the workers also have said they were housed in cramped mobile storage containers, told not to leave the farm after work and denied any pay at all for months.

This is about as pathetic as Early America, equally so, it is trying to claim the same reasons, that early America claimed after the Civil War, which allowed some areas in the U.S. to keep slaves until their death, and to keep the slaves until they were 18 as slaves. by claiming these areas as economic zones, and saying it would damage the economy if they lost their slaves. so people were continued to be forced into slave labor, rather than to simply pay them for their labor.

Mankind can be a Greedy Animal, void of humanity or the respect of human beings. When will the world stop supporting anyone, going to other countries, disrespecting their people all because they don't have money. While every form of gluttony is engaged around the globe.

It simply goes to show that when some people get money or make money, they will use anyone to keep making money, and have not thought, and claim it as their right to do so.

Countries, Like Thailand, Cambodia Laos,Africa, Philippines, and the Poor people of India and China, equally so the poor people in South America locations. Must began to stand up, to other location using their people like a open slave market, to satisfy their own gluttonous arrogance and greed.

Goons are everywhere, looking to treat others like slaves, for their own selfish consumption aims.

Don't leave your home, on some scam, that you have no idea of what the results may bring, when people offer labor in foreign lands.

You may want to ask, why they are not hiring their own people to do this work ??

Star crossed Illusions ( how much have you learned about loving)

It seem to be that no matter how "hot" the media frenzy may claim some to be, Nor how sexy it may claim that some are. Even how sensual and claimed to be of the perfect selection such as the marketing frenzy of the media paints the pictures of people with embellished claims.

Reality Shows Up !!!

Reality comes to show up, that many have as much challenge in relationship, as the media hype does not suffice for simply liking and appreciating each other. Nor does it replace the work necessary for learning to learn how to share lives with the feelings of loving within it.

The glitz fades, and the allure factor changes, when the reality settles down to the daily lives of people.

The Red Carpet illusion, of physical beauty making happiness is in many ways a fleeting fantasy, as well as, the delusion that wealth and privileged is the key to a perfect relationship, many have found this to be a bigger fantasy with much folly within the mix and confusion within the delusion, shatters the fragile illusion.

She's pretty to look at and he has money and, they too, find broken relationship of every sort. the deceptive cycle of the of the fantasy concept, has found reality to show, it is not a magic formula, nor does it bring any guarantee of anything. Beyond the fact that between man and woman, they still have to LEARN, to communicate among much else, they must learn to do.

Illusions of such things as money and looks, unfortunately make many pursue what is but the delusion, that is riddle with confusion.

Center stage, and a sudden stage left exit via the same entrance they came. and some quickly flee to stage right, looking for another illusion, and again.. the glitz, the opulence, and the fashions of media blitz, brings many back to reality.

these things are 'external", and what become the matter, more than all that many think is of matter. Is the simplicity of actually "liking each other as individuals"

this is found as well, in the simplest of realities, it may be a man with no money and a woman, who is pretty to look at, or it may be a women who is not pretty to look at with a man, who has money, or it may be a woman who is not glamor media surrounded by glitz, and a man, who is a common worker in the world of life.

Many have come to find, many things. some find, that beyond all the glitz, the status, and the illusions.

its very simple.. "liking each other" as individuals..

It does not matter if she has money or he has money, it does not matter if she is hailed as a beauty marquee image, or a women of general non pretentious fashion..

If they simply learn to share and appreciate each other in doing so, they may find.. life is always the same for everyone.

There is the challenge to communicate, and the work to understand and be understood, and the constant cycle of LEARNING, how to share as individual people.

Holding out for the illusion, many find solitude and sadness, as well as cycles of self delusion.

Holding out with a thought that the money wagon will come attached to an image of media hype, has left many to become bitter, cold, cruel and manipulative.

Still, the simplicity is, "a man and woman", actually liking each other, and being open to LEARN each other, as they work on the understanding of knowing how to share.

Gender illusion, nope being female does not give you control of the relationship, and being male, does not give you dominance of the woman.

Gender Illusions, nope being female does not mean you will or should be given everything freely, nor does being male with money mean you can buy appreciate that actually is of or for the reality of you.

Being pretty on the outside, does not mean you are kind within your mind, nor does being wealthy and giving unto charity, mean that you are genuinely with considerate care as a basic individual. unfortunately, publicist make many charitable arrangement, for the sake of promotional benefit, yet, some do find causes they truly support. and some with outer prettiness, do have minds that are with compassionate regard for and of others.

Again, it comes to "Learning to live" in a world of many things, and how to be ones self with a willingness to continue to learn how to share, and develop the skills to communicate, and embrace the wisdom to be understanding, as well as willing to put in the work to be understood.

Star Crossed Illusions.... entails many things...

and, the reality perspective is soon revealed.

who can survive to accept the choices they make, and embrace the understanding it takes... to Learn to Make Sharing, function to support the work it takes to keep appreciations considerate to appreciate ??

The funny thing of life, no matter how pretty you may compare yourself unto and against others, nor how wealthy one may claim themselves in comparison unto others.
You get no guarantee of anything, nor will the infatuation with your looks nor with your money, will blind a mate options from seeing the reality behind the external measurement elements.

Beauty Queens nor Multi Millionairs, get any guarantee, about how real and honest love is. Nor does those thing, signify that one of pretty to look at beauty, is any more honest than the not so pretty to look at, nor the near broke or financially strapped individuals.

Beauty if fleeting, and fragile, and wealth is fragile and fleeting. both can create illusion, that truths uncover in the reality of relationships and the challenges and trials of what make love and interesting endeavor in our lives.

People claiming to wait on the perfect mate, live their own delusion of perfection, and find time shows them how imperfect they are as being simply a human being in the world of life.

Some expect things based on their looks, and some expect things based on their money, and those are sometimes the ones, who are quicker to loose respect for things, because they continually expect things, rather than respect things.

Some claim their looks can get them any man, but their attitude can't keep any man. some claim their money can get them anything, but their money makes them a target, and or attitude of assumption they can have anything, can make it worst.

Life is a short span, but can be made long in the time taken to appreciate, it can become enriched with the simply nature of having a will, want and active life for and of sharing. it become precious, by what we respect, and the respect we hold to be respectful.

your illusion of a perfect relationship are yours, not those of your mate, they have their own.. and the only common ground is found within and through communication, the willingness to understand and the capability to be of considerate compromising adjustments within being able to understand.

No mates job is to live your illusion, nor is it your job to live the mates illusion, but to build the reality that works for two.

Unfortunately many, who fly in and out of relationships, fail to learn this simple truth.. and they flee always laying blame on someone else, because they failed in themselves, to realize the dream is to be built on two ideals, not dictated by their ideals.

Gender is Gender, designed for male and female to compliment each other as well as accommodate each other. Not some delusion, that one gender is better than another, nor above the simplicity to be with effort to respect each other.

Efforts and Actions, of trying to be dictating what and how your mate should be, is your delusion, that shall crash in upon you, because it does not respect the fact that a relationship is made of two individuals, a man and a woman, and they must obey the laws of life, which is simply to find harmony via communication, and to find peace via understanding, and to find love, via sharing.

Any other way, one becomes merely a fool of self consumption, seeking to dictate their life upon another, or they engage in a game of manipulations, playing ultimatum and expectations, and always finding despair in the end result of such selfishness.

Looking at the big picture of many things in the world and what makes for social living;

"Our lives are by every means, meant to be a sharing experience".

seems like an extra day for work of some sort..

Some may work hard to have a good time, some may work at enjoying themselves and some may work hard at doing nothing, while some work hard to catch up on task.. some work hard to cram in shopping, and some work hard, against working hard....

are these cost to the three day weekend? some may spend three months income over three days, some may spend more than other make in the course of a year, on this three day weekend, and some may not spend much, and some may not have anything to spend.

How many may find Tuesday, to reveal they found happiness, is an interesting mix of many things.

As happiness may be derived from all the above, or none of the above.

Having the opportunity for Three days may be many things, but the grace of the time to engage life, may well turn out to be the greatest blessing of it all.

outrageously overpriced products

Here are six outrageously overpriced products that consumers can't seem to live without.

1. Movie Theater Popcorn

At the grocery store, microwave popcorn runs about $3 per box, and each box includes three 3.5 ounce bags. So why on earth would consumers even consider paying a whopping $6 for a single medium-sized bag of popcorn in the movie theater? No one knows exactly why - but for some bizarre reason, movie-goers continue to drain their wallets to crunch on a bag full of those greasy little nuggets during their favorite film.

After considering that movie theaters purchase popcorn in bulk, the average markup of movie theater popcorn is a whopping 1275%! At that steep price, you'd think those buttery bags were laced with gold.

2. Greeting Cards

Since when does a folded up piece of paper cost $2.99? Since someone slaps a precious kitty picture and a cleverly written message on it and then stamps the back of it with a well-known logo. That's right - we're talking about those pricey greeting cards. Many consumers spend hours poring over the neatly arranged stacks in the greeting card aisle, searching for the perfect message for their sister's birthday, their parent's anniversary or "Just Because."

The average greeting card costs between $2 and $4, and we consumers don't seem to think twice about paying that precipitous price. The markup is between 100 and 200% - which is not quite as shocking as movie theater popcorn, but it adds up quickly. When you consider how many of those paper jewels you buy each year, it's enough to send you running for the construction paper and markers. After all, it only costs a few cents to create a home-made card.

3. College Textbooks

In 2010, the annual in-state cost for the typical state university soared to more than $15,000, and private colleges now charge an average of $35,600 a year. As if college (and their parents) aren't financially drained enough, there's yet another inflated price they face: college textbooks. College students pay an average of $900 a year on textbooks and other supplies.

College textbook prices have skyrocketed by 186% since 1986, and these expensive volumes of knowledge now account for 26% of the overall cost of college. Unfortunately, broke college students are required to purchase these costly books for their classes. At least they can try to sell their books back to local book store at the end of the semester - for a few measly bucks.

4. Bottled Water

You've probably heard that "Evian" is simply "naïve" spelled backwards. OK, so the well-known company probably did not choose their name for that reason - but many people believe that consumers who buy bottled water are certainly naïve. After all, water is one of the most abundant resources in the world and is available for free from countless water fountains and sinks across the nation. Yet, many consumers are still willing to pay $3 a bottle of it.

In 2009, the U.S. Congress revealed that about 45% of bottled water comes from municipal taps - and then the bottled water company may or may not do some additional filtering before pouring it in their logo-stamped bottles. Still, Americans continue to buy more than 500 million bottles every week, making it the second most popular purchased drink (after soda).

5. Printer Ink

You may be able to buy a surprisingly affordable printer at your local office supply store, but don't start celebrating just yet. The printer companies make their biggest bucks on ink.

Over the life of your printer, you'll probably pay more than 500% of the total price of the printer itself on ink refill cartridges. At $30, a 42ml cartridge of black printer ink comes out to 71 cents per ml. On the other hand, the Red Cross charges $200 for 500 ml of blood, which comes out to about 40 cents per ml.

6. Brand-Name Fashions

How much did you pay for those True Religion jeans, that Burberry scarf and those towering Louboutin stilettos? Probably a small fortune. But it was worth every penny, right? Not so much. When it comes to designer clothes, it's pretty obvious that you are paying for the label.

As a matter of fact, brand-name clothes are often marked up by 500 to 1000%. Yet, fashion-conscious consumers continue to drain their bank accounts and pile up massive amounts of debt to stay on the cutting edge of couture.

Broke Consumers Are Saying No

The recession has hit many households hard, and thousands of broke consumers are passing on these and other overpriced products. So, does that mean the inflated prices of these items will eventually fall? Only time will tell. In the meantime, you may want to check your bank account before you hit the movie theater snack bar.

The construction, of a good shoe

I guess when the financial matters are better, then its time to step up a notch..

"Allen Edmonds Shoe"

but with a good shoe, then comes the quality belt to match it..

The dollars need to be right, to do it right

but, with the value of what it takes for this kind of investment, surely one can get durability and longevity from the classic styles and, not waste money on the come and go fads.
